LOA for the Class of 2015

LOA

Recruited athletes can get them earlier I think. I talked to a good LAX player who already had his, but he said the Academy sends all its LAX and football recruits to NAPS. That's where he is going.

I have been told I am a strong candidate and received an email telling me I was among a "select group of candidates" and encouraging me to complete my application. A Navy admissions officer said that was a very good sign. But looking at what other candidates are reporting about their resumes, there is a whole lot of top-notch competition.

Midwannabe, I received the same e-mail but assumed they sent it to everyone. They said I was on a "short list of candidates" encouraging me to get the rest of my app in. I got everything in a day later. And I agree, there is a lot top-notch competition so I'm in the same boat! Good luck!

Actually, that is what my e-mail said too: "Your record looks mpressive so far" and "you are on a very short list of candidates." I asked two admissions officers at an Navy open house and they said that e-mail was not sent to everyone and indicated that it is a positive sign. But who knows? It seems strange that the Academy would lead us on with a phrase like that if they didn't mean it.

What were your SATs? Mine were 690 Math, 600 Critical Reading. I've taken 10 AP courses, captained a varsity sport, am in the top 20 percent of my class, have been state certified as an Emergency Medical Technician and Firefighter II, and do an emergency response and search and rescue shift every week.

Don't know if that is enough though. Reading these sites, it is clear there are some serious folks out there. I've wanted to go there all my life so I really hope I get in. I'll keep trying until I'm too old to try.

Wow, Midwannabe, I feel the same way! The Academy has been a long-term ambition for as long as I can remember. I think your resume does sound impressive!

I have 630 Reading 620 Math SATs. I'm hoping to improve them a LOT next month when I re-take them. I have a 4.0 weighted GPA and I'm in the IB Program at my high school, so if you're not familiar with that, it's basically like taking a bunch of AP courses all the time, I guess. High level courses, but my grades definitely weren't straight A's.

I'm Vice President of Spanish Honor Society, a member of all the other honor societies (National, English, Math), Secretary of our School Advisory Council, participant/attorney/jury of the Teen Court program, Co-coach/participant of Odyssey of the Mind, camp counselor, and a bunch of other volunteer stuff. I've also run Varsity Track/Cross Country all four years of high school. But I hope my leadership is enough.

And yeah I hope they wouldn't lead us on, but such is life, and I'll just hope for the best! :)

You sound impressive too! I think one thing going for us is that the Academy knows what it is looking for and has years of experience finding it. They are looking for the whole person, not just the academic whiz kid --someone they can someday give command of a billion-dollar aircraft carrier. I imagine either of us could have taken regular honors courses and had a much higher GPA. I didn't have to take AP Physics C (and maybe I wish I didn't. That stuff makes your hair hurt:)

Leadership is a tough one. It seems to me that getting elected to something in high school is often a sign of popularity rather than leadership. But I'm sure they've figured that out too. I often take the lead on emergency rescue calls, so I'm hoping they count that. It's a little different doing CPR on a heart attack victim than being president of the debate club but it's still leadership:)

I'm sorry I forgot to mention. I am not a recruited athlete.

and yes a big help for me was having my application completely ready during the summer.

I was on the waiting list for NASS and was notified around 2 or 3 weeks before my session, so it is a good point that coming from MD, don't be discouraged if you don't go to NASS. The main thing is to apply for it! I guess you can say I barely got into NASS. It was a great experience though.

Best of luck to everyone

I understand the admissions board is meeting today for the first time. Will the B and G officer be able to tell whether I am going to be offered a LOA or do I have to wait for the mail?

I also heard that it is really advantageous to have a complete application for this first meeting since the competition is not as fierce since a lot of people don't get their applications in. Is that true? Would a candidate who might not get one next month possibly get one this month because of this?

In my case, I was notified by mail and I notified my BGO. and LOAs keep rolling through the fall from what I know. This is just the beginning. Not receiving an LOA is not the end of the world either. The important thing is an offer of appointment.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I feel like the leadership roles that you put on a resume are just titles--mostly due to popularity, for sure! I may not be "captain" of my cross country team, but that doesn't mean that I don't wait up for the slow ones and make sure everyone's doing okay. I mean, you can be a leader in whatever you do in life, but that doesn't mean you have to slap a title on it to get credit. So I hope both our potential shows up either way. :)

And definitely, it's the fact that we took those higher courses offered and worked hard for the less high grades is what matters. I take it you might be interested in being an aviator? Me too!

Btw, congrats to you, N.Leondaridis.Mena!

Hey all,
I completed my app sometime around the end of July, BGO interview in Aug. 1st.
I have a 640 English, 760 Math, 5.15 GPA weighted (I.B. Programme weights higher in our school, which I'm in) and the President of my Science National Honor Society.
I am a four year varsity weightlifter, and have done a year of varsity football and varsity wrestling, and lettered in every year.
I attend NASS (Session 1), and passed the CFA, maxed everything besides the run, bball throw and sprint (8.59)
And I honestly have no idea where I'm standing; my app has been done since Aug. 1st, I have yet to get a nomination though because Im in FL and my MOCs dont nominate until november.
Any tips? I've been dying to go to this academy as well, FutureNavyPilot. Hopefully I'll see you there =)

Go you! You had your app in pretty early too. Awesome sports, plus I didn't know schools had a Science National Honor Society?! Cool! I attended NASS session 2, it was a blast! And heyyy I'm in Florida too! Tampa Bay Area. Same to you, good luck. :)

Someone mentioned earlier that anyone who is applying to USNA (but didn't get into NASS) shouldn't feel discouraged. I received an LOA, and I didn't even get accepted to NASS.

I'm sure that NASS is only a representation of how many candidates would like the program after experiencing it. For example, I kept my buddies from NASS on facebook; 3 of them already declared that they are no longer applying to the academy.
It was told over and over at NASS that the 60% of NASS would come to the academy. The other 40%, would come from outstanding kids that didnt go to NASS, such as you, usna candidate.
ALPHA 4-3! (we got everyones doorknobs for our spirit mission ;))

Yeah exactly. Someone at NASS told me that only 1/3 of the NASS kids would get accepted? Yeah a couple people I know from there aren't even applying, and 2 kids in my squad are medically DQ'd. ): It makes me sad for them.

i remember this time last year as if it were yesterday......my son never received a LOA from USNA but had them in hand from the Air Force Academy & West Point along with a NROTC scholarship offer from the University of Notre Dame......but he knew his entire life the Naval Academy was where he wanted to be so he patiently held out......even after receiving nominations from both our Congressman and from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison he waited untio March to receive his "Offer of Appointment".....his patience paid off and he is a proud member of the USNA Class of 2014.......i can't say the waiting was easy because it wasn't.....but to change anything about the process, NEVER......neither he or i will ever forget July 1, 2010......to ya'll.....your journey has just begun so sit back and enjoy every minute of it......

Thanks for your message Bailey. I keep telling my DS that if it weren't so hard, it wouldn't mean so much. I sure hope we are able to look back at all of this one day as you do!

LOA

For me, it was pretty discouraging not to get into NASS. Then I found out that if you are from Maryland, it's almost impossible to get in because they figure you can visit the Academy anytime you want. And, of course, I've been there a zillion times, as my two grandfathers and great-grandfather are grads.

It's also apparently harder to get into the Academy if you live in Maryland or in Northern Virginia. because it's a local university and everyone wants to go there. They do take proportionately more candidates from Maryland.
