LOA from the USAFA for class of 23

Ahh, hopefullmom, you kinda made me blush. Not defensive - I just left my sugar-coating hat in my other tractor. (< see, that was a funny line!).

Your child (and you!) are on step about 124 out of about 2685.

I was in your shoes once, and having to decide (for one twin, the other was USAFA all the way) whether to go to a Service Academy or a civ college/uni on a "full scholarship" (until injury strikes) can be tough.

I check the spam folder of my email every couple of weeks just in case something important missed my inbox. Tonight I saw a message (in my spam folder) from USAFA Admissions "concerning your application to the US Air Force Academy." When I checked my portal, I saw that I earned an LOA! I'm beyond excited and now hope to earn a nomination! My congressional interview is December 1.

I've never heard the term "Academic LOA" but knew exactly what was meant by it. My DD, not a recruited athlete, received LOA before Christmas her senior year. When I mentioned it at the January local parents meeting, my first question was "what sport does she play?" My point is, most people assume because you received LOA, you're getting it for sports. So calling it an "Academic LOA" is a way to say he/she is not a jock. The bias DOES exist. I know a walk-on, now a starter on the team who is quick to mention he received his appointment as a non-recruited athlete. I'm not saying it's right or wrong. It just IS.

Would you mind sharing your stats?

Congrats! Do you mind sharing when your app was marked complete and the date you received the LOA email?

You asked for me to share my stats- I was told that Academies choose candidates for different reasons to have a diverse class....so my personal stats will not help much but.....
-Not a recruited athlete
-White male
-I was not admitted to Summer Seminar (declined)- but was admitted to NASS and SLE
-Good but not great test scores
-Above average CFA
-Class rank 1/218
-I have quite a few extracurriculars and leadership roles
- I’m a marathon runner and wrestler
-I’m from California

I don’t know if that helps.

Awesome. Do you happen to know the date your application showed fully complete? Just trying to gauge how long the reviewing process is currently taking, as you received the LOA on Nov 7.

I don't see a date on my portal showing that my application was considered complete, but all documents (including my ALO Evaluator Interview) were in and accepted by September 28.

Great scores overall indeed Irun26.2. Based on what I have heard (AF being at > 7000 ft elevation) and other posters seen on this forum, it is clear that 1 mile run is their most important deciding factor. Your mile run is exceptional. Wish you continue success.

I believe the max for the mile run is 5:20.

I would have thought you maxxed 2 events. Pull Ups and 1 mile run.[/QUOTE]

Seriously? It is indeed important, simply because it is the last and most difficult part of the CFA. After completing the rest, the candidate now has to run his best mile. He's tired, stressed, and now has to run.

When Twin A had to run his mile for the CFA, he'd been used to running it (practiced in order of event, of course) at the local high school track. Eight times around = 1 mile. When he took the CFA it was in a hundred year old YMCA building in the center of another city, on a second story track above their small basketball gym. For that event, 22 times around = 1 mile. Timing was so difficult for him, but he used his BRAIN to figure how many times around was equal to one time around at the track. And essentially, he was running in a circle.

The CFA can be a make/break event for prospective cadets. Even the best high school athletes fail to train correctly (some not at all, thinking they are "all that" in athletics because they run XC or play in the band, or even play on three sports). EVERY event in the CFA is important. Can't throw that basketball? Out. Can't do sit ups or flexed arm hang or shuttle run? Bye bye.

Don't just practice for the RUN. PRACTICE EACH EVENT IN ORDER OF EVENTS. Yes, work on your weaknesses, but do not neglect to practice correctly.

Practice does not make perfect, but perfect practice makes perfect a lot more likely.

Great! Actually, we are in district -17 CA (Silicon Valley). Our DS has his congressional interview on Jan 13th. Off course, no words from any CA senator yet.

My DS completed his USAFA application including the DoDMERB (Potential Pilot Qualified) and CFA, except nomination for sure.

I was wondering when USAFA starts sending the Letter of Assurance?

BTW, he received a LOE (letter of encouragement) from the West Point last week. Very excited.

Thanks
My daughter listed USMA as #1 on all of her nom applications. She received her LOA for USAFA the first week of November last year, prior to her last interview. It ended up being a phone interview and she told them USAFA was now her #1. She also notified the other interview panels via email of her LOA after the fact. Our district is tough and rarely do MOC offer noms to more than one SA to give each applicant a chance. Offhand, I can’t recall if her interview with the MOC that gave her the mom was before or after she received her LOA. Unless they are a recruited athlete, LOA are hard to come by but I wish your child the very best! It’s been a wild ride for sure! First semester is almost complete!
