LOA & Nomination: A Waiting game

Everyone should be applying to other colleges, even those who have LOA's and nominations. It's a long time between now and I day and anything can happen.

I agreed 100%. My son has USNA LOA in Sept, MOC nomination is the only remaining item. USCGA admission also informed that he will get the USCGA appointment next month, however, he still applying to other colleges.

Anything can happen between now and May 1.

Our son kept his backup plan (admission to a big State U) right up until I Day at USNA

Can you get the room and board deposit back ??? How about the tuition deposit ??

We got the Room & Board deposit back, but not the tuition deposit. Each university's policies will probably be different. I know it's hard to think about losing the $, but compared to the fact that we don't have to pay for our son's college tuition at USNA it was just a tiny drop in the bucket. If something had happened to prevent him from showing up on I Day, he would have still been able to attend a first rate university for his freshman year. We felt that it was pretty cheap "insurance"!

You all need to have a backup plan and I suggest it is active until I Day. Typically you will be out your deposit but that is all. That is awfully good insurance IMO.

I know of a young man who was slated (Appointment in hand) for the Class of 2013 - had a baseball injury in late May resulting in surgery and being medically disqualified for the class of 2013. He was offered a guarantee for the class of 2014. He did have a backup school but was also offered a foundation spot (although without full funding) He did have to be evaluated by DODMERB to make sure the injury healed properly.

Fast forward to June 8th 2010, while driving to our governors reception for all Academy appointees, he rolled his car and was injured again. So again not eligible for the class of 2014. This time not offered admittance for 2015 and is continuing at our state university.

Our son's backup school actually offered to keep his spot until PPW although we let them know to release it as of mid July so that it could be offered to another person and the scholarship money reassigned.

Not having a backup school is a bad thing. A late medical DQ after review even with a LOA can be a killer. You might be stuck with no school for the Fall. Not as bad a Profmom2 but we had a realy initially bad situation with DoDMERB (although they were tremendously helpful during the review procedure). Until DQ overturned, waitlisted because she did normal application dates (only wanted NAVY) not early at other schools and possibly missing one year of school. HAVE THE BACKUP IN YOUR POCKET. You can apply again and again and again.

While realizing there are all kinds of "what if's" the last few responses have important reasons not to rest on your laurels because you have an LOA or even an offer of appointment. Things can and do happen, and no one is exempt. Do your plans A, B, C, D, etc, and avoid being blind-sided. It is much less stressful to cancel those unused plans than to have to go into a fullcourt scramble to cover something unforeseen. Best wishes to all of you.
