i believe i have seen in previous threads that the LOAs are rare and that in any given class there are only about 10%, or in the case of this year 130. but on the forum DIY appointment thread there are 62 LOAs, which is almost 50% of the forum appointments.

so i wonder if the Academy has started giving a lot more LOA's this year are is it just that 1/2 the LOA recipients happen to be on this forum. maybe people with and LOA are just more apt to be on the SAF....

I looked at the thread yesterday and had that same observation.

My guess is the LOAs are more likely to join.

@mcfamilyof4 The number of candidates who receive LOA’s on these forums is the exception not the rule.

Many if not most of the candidates on here are extremely qualified which is why there is so many people reporting LOA’s.

I don’t think USNA is increasing the number of LOA’s, but the fact that candidates are utilizing these forums early in the process shows that they are getting ready at an earlier time.

No one here knows. And if anyone says they do, I would take it with a grain of salt or three. And don’t bother trying to extrapolate based on what you think you know about who posts here. Only Admissions knows, and they ain’t telling.

I don’t think anyone on the forum can say with certainty the number of LOAs given out each year. My estimate based upon watching the forum the last few years is they have remained steady and possibly even slightly reduced. I have no data to support that, just my gut watching class after class. I do think the candidates we see on here get a lot of LOAs. I think it’s because they are well prepared candidates, hopefully the forum has helped with that!

I think that people with LOAs tend to get their Offers of Appointment earlier than most, so they have a lot of time on their hands wondering what's next. Every year, there is a slew of new members signing up around November or December, I think because of this reason.

They join and ask lots of questions about nominations and DoDMERB, because those are typically the only things (conditions) standing in the way of an LOA-in-hand, and a fully qualified Offer of Appointment.

It is a theory.

I joined shortly after my son secured his nomination and LOA. I wish I knew it existed before he started his application.

His LOA came right after he submitted his CFA scores and before he took his medical tests (we knew he would be dq’ed and waited to do it).

I was curious about the colorblind waiver process ... so I certainly fit THParent’s observation.
