My DS was fortunate to receive a LOA to USCGA in the mail yesterday. He was scheduled to retake the ACT on Saturday and the SAT next month. Coast Guard is his first choice therefore, he doesn't have any desire to follow thru with the MOC nomination and the Naval Academy. As a parent, we are encouraging him to follow thru with Plan B and C knowing he has several hurdles to pass yet for his full appointment. I have read all sorts of advice from parents and cadets that encourage him to keep his plan b and c. What do you think his follow thru should be for the retake of his ACT/ Sat's? He scored very well on his first ACT. He was just going to try to improve one area.

My first thought is to continue with Plan B and C. You don't say whether he is DODMERB qualified yet. If he is not, it may end up being a situation where he needs a waiver and it is granted by Plan B or C and not USCGA. If that is the case, than he will need a MOC nomination and it certainly won't hurt to retake the ACT/SAT. Also, it is a long road for the next few months and he may actually change his mind even though he thinks he is certain.

@MtJo, as you know, an LOA is contingent on certain conditions being met. So what are the conditions stipulated? If it’s a simple issue that you’re confident of addressing, then no worries. If it’s potentially more complicated, like DODMERB, then DS should get serious about Plan B, C, D.

Even with offer of appointment in hand, too many things can happen between now and swearing-in that could scuttle DS’s dream. (That’s why you hear a lot about “bubble wrap” for those who’ve received the BFE.) Smart candidates are ready for the possibility of something going wrong.

Based on the above points, DS can figure out how seriously to take the upcoming SAT/ACT. If it were up to me — with so much still up in the air — I’d be going all-out.

He applied but was not selected for AIM and I can't honestly answer about the timing of his application. Sorry about that.

My DS also got an LOA on Tuesday afternoon. He attended AIM. The admin called to congratulate and reference that he did really well during AIM so they want him to know that has a spot as long as the application completed by 10/15 and DoDMERB qualified by 3/15. The race against the clock and hopefully no hurdle begins.
