LOA to 1, nom to another

My DS received his LOA for USAFA 18 Nov...quite a surprise considering USNA was his first choice and the only academy for which he interviewed with both senators and rep. His nomination for USNA came 16 Nov. Sooo, now we have LOA without nom to AFA, and nom without appointment to USNA. I might just go crazy!

Just wondering...if AFA wants him do you think he has a good shot at USNA appointment?

PS I'm sure there's no good way to answer this. Just venting.

My friend and I are both going to the same high school, same classes, and same community service. His grades are about the same, but his ACT score is higher. That being said, I have and LOA to USAFA, and he has one to USNA. Our extracurriculars are a slight different as well, but were both active, and our CFA is identical.

So I'm not sure if that helps, but at least I tried!

Best of Luck,

Falcon

Did you two both apply to USAFA and USNA - must be nice to have someone to commiserate with. Best of luck to you!

My first choice is USAFA and his is USNA.

Yes, it's nice to have someone to talk to, but before we got our LOA's it was tooth and nail between us. I found it to be super frustrating knowing there were three of us competing for spots that were very unlikely. As of right now two people other than myself have LOA's and we all go to the same school! CRAZY! They both want USNA and I'm by myself wanting USAFA.

Let me know if you have any questions, maybe I can help!

Best of Luck.

arewethereyet: I don't know which state you live in, so this might not be possible. When my son was going through the process, he had LOAs to USNA and to USMA. Both his noms were for USMA, as it was his first choice. I called the MOC and asked if he could be moved to the USNA slate since he already had one USMA nom. They were able to do that. That way, he could choose which he wanted (he hadn't visited USNA at this point). He ended up choosing USMA, which I figured he would, but it was nice to have options. He turned down the USNA appointment in plenty of time for them to offer it to someone else. So, you can try calling your MOC and see what happens...

Just a thought here.....you really don't need to worry about turning down an appointment so they can offer it to someone else........the SA's make more offers than they expect to receive acceptances. From their experience, they know roughly how many offers to extend to get the class size they want. So, turning back your offer does not necessarily open up a slot for someone else. No need to worry about sitting on an offer until near the "deadline" for acceptance. It is your option to do so. Without "denying" someone else an opportunity.:thumb:

continued waiting

Thank you mom and jenny for your replies. When we got the phone call from AFA the admissions officer did mention to us about having DS's nom switched to and/or added to the AFA slate. The SA liason at the MOC's office didn't seem to think that scenario was a possibility.

DS has applied for the VP nom...I know its a long shot but as has been stated on this forum many times, always apply to all nomination sources available to the candidate.

So for now, "we" continue the vigil: forum watching, mailman stalking and frequent checks of the portals.

Merry Christmas!

arewethereyet: I see you are from GA. We are too, so I know you can switch the nom. You need to call your nominating source in Jan and talk to the SA staffer. They want to see their constituents appointed, so they will help you if they can.

My nephew had nomination to USNA, wanted AFA also. Denied admission to USNA, recieved LOA from AFA. Went back to original nominating source and asked them to change. They said they had no more slots available. "Somehow" a nomination from a different state Representative (not his own) was able to nominate him. He ended up at AFA...graduated...is now a fighter pilot.

My son applied to all three academies; AFA always his first choice. In his congressional interviews he reiterated that AFA was his first choice and USMA was his third. Not surprisingly, He did not receive a nomination to USMA from any congressional member. But the wildest thing happened. In early March he recieved a letter from VP Dick Chaney nominating him to USMA and in the same mail delivery an a appointment to USMA arrived. So...arewethereyet...it is my opinion that the academies hold those VP appts. in reserve and "pull them out" when they want a student who does not have an appointment from another source. It is also my opinion that if an academy wants a particular student, they will find a way to make it happen.

Oh, btw, our son will be graduating from AFA in May 2011. :)

hope is still alive

Thank you for the encouraging stories Darla. We continue to be hopeful and wait for good news from any source!

Here's another encouraging story: My dd had LOA but no nom to AFA and 2 noms to USNA plus LOA. We were able to get the second nom to USNA switched to AFA. Our rep's office thought "2 noms would give her a better chance". Um, no, because she already HAD the LOA... And then she picked USNA anyway, but did a sem at AFA and now is an ensign who is (wait for it) in flight school with AF! We tease her that she STILL can't decide!

We feel your pain, a very good family friend is in the same boat. She has 2 noms to USNA, and an LOA to USAFA with no noms. USNA remains her first choice, but they don't seem to have the interest in her that USAFA has, and USAFA is almost ranked as high as USNA for her, so she would be thrilled with an appointment to USAFA. We are all on pins and needles. She applied to every nom source available, but also knows a VP is a long shot. Her ALO told her not to panic...yet.
