I received an LOE recently, and I am just wondering exactly what it means for anyone who has been through the process. I know its not like an LOA, but I hope it means something.

In simple terms it means they like what they see in your file enough to encourage you to keep finishing it. They don't do that for everyone. It also avails you the ability to do a visit at WP. Additionally, when my oldest received an LOE, it was known to her MOC and as a result she stood out among the other nomination candidates in the nomination review process.

Ultimately, it means nothing if you do not complete your file, maintain your strong path, pass DODMERB, get a nomination, etc.

I like to loosely compare an LOE to an NFL 6th round draft choice.

The 6th round draft choice is guaranteed a spot at training camp and will get a real close look, just like an LOE authorizes an overnight visit and assures a close look. But if an undrafted free agent outperforms the 6th round pick, the 6th round pick gets cut. If a candidate in the same district without an LOE has a higher WCS score than the LOE candidate, the higher score wins regardless of LOE.

Agreed. Liking the analogy. Many variables to consider indeed.
Another example is if an MOC uses the Principal nomination method and selects another candidate on their slate. They will also beat out the LOE holder on that slate.
So the candidate granted an LOE should be excited for the recognition from the SA and to complete their absolute best application as quickly and efficiently as possible. It is definitely a good and somewhat rare thing to receive an LOE, but far from an appointment. Also, if possible take advantage of the visit if offered.

Yes, good point. A qualified Principal Nominee will also beat out an LOA holder for the MOC appointment. USMA would then have to find another appointment source for the LOA holder.

When using a ranked slate, a savvy MOC puts LOA holders at the bottom of the slate.
