Long range TWIC enrollment process

The entire process of gaining and keeping your Merchant Mariner Credential is becoming more and more difficult and tedious. The National Maritime Center may have made it consistent across the board for anyone as opposed the past when certain Exam Centers were known to be more troublesome than others, but in my experience they have made it troublesome for everyone.

You have to pick up the TWIC card in person and show your ID. We wondered the same thing. The enrollment center in Louisville KY is only open until noon M-F so I called to see if we had to have it picked up within so many days of it being complete. It only took 10 days from the date of application. DS doesn't want to miss any school. (He can omit some final exams with perfect attendance.). Nope, we can wait until school let's out in June. The national enrollment center told me you don't have to pick it up for 5 years ( the lenth it is valid). But it must be in person with ID.

In person

Yes, as stated above, must be picked up in person with ID. And you will be required to generate an electronic password, which is "burned" into the cards internal chip, when you pick it up.

i just applied for my TWIC today and it was quite the haul to the enrollment center and i dont wanna do it again. my father is an airline pilot and when he travels, he is right near the enrollment center that i went to today to enroll, so is he allowed to pick up the card for me so that i dont have to go back, or do i physically have to be there?

Ryno23,

Since your dad is an airline pilot why don't just non rev to go pick it up?

We had to drive to another state for the TWIC (but it was only a 2 hour drive each way). There was a parent at the Open House that said that there wasn't a TWIC office in his state either, and it would be a VERY long car ride to California to get this done... They sympathized but still suggested to this father that they do a family road trip (twice)... They recommended getting this done prior to INDOC-(and said they would accomodate your child when he gets to school if it's not done, BUT they DEFINITELY suggested getting it done prior to INDOC. I'm sorry, I can't remember the exact words of what was said?). Best of luck! (I do know that the office we went to said it typically takes 6-8 weeks to get the TWIC back, but they were running way a head of time and my son's came back in less than 2 weeks. He is heading down with my husband to pick it up tomorrow)!!
