Hi, I'm a class of 2027 applicant to USAFA and I was unfortunately medically DQ'd on January 25th for being blind as a bat.
D155.70: Myopia - refractive error greater than -8.00 diopters (spherical equivalent).

I have two nominations in a pretty competitive area (close to Wright Patt AFB) so I'm pretty hopeful for my chances but yet again, who knows? It's been almost two months since I was notified and I've read a few people on here that got theirs in a few days or weeks which is pretty disheartening for my case but I'm still holding onto the dream. On the bright side, I received a 4-year type 1 ROTC scholarship through the space force which I'm currently in the remedial process of getting a waiver for right now. That was posted on February 23 so almost a month for this one and still no update from the CIV team about finding a provider close to me to help do my remedial.

For anyone that's had any similar experiences or just knows anything about when I might hear back, I'd really appreciate it if anyone has any nuggets of wisdom.

My son is in the same boat. He was disqualified for (self diagnosed/reported) shin pain (hes a runner) on Jan. 25. He has not heard a peep from anyone and has three nominations in for USMA and 2 for USNA. I know the waiting is awful, but you are amazing for coming this far. Hang in there. I am trying to occupy my sons mind so he doesnt constantly check his portal(s), but now I keep checking for him.

Thank you for your sentiments. It's good to hear that others are in the same boat. Best wishes to your son and let's hope we both hear back soon.

Have you considered calling the CIV team to inquire about your remedial? Or finding your own provider?

I called a week after the waiver notice and I just called again earlier this week. Both times they said they were still looking for a provider for me. When should I start thinking about contacting my own eye doctor?

I think it’s entirely up to you if you are ready to locate your own provider and pay out of pocket. I think they have 30 days to locate one, so at this point maybe wait it out the 30 days since you are so close. Assuming you have until August to get your Waiver approved you still have time, but just be aware that your scholarship won’t kick in until you can contract, which won’t happen until your waiver is granted. I am going to caution you to choose a college situation that you can afford and will be happy with, should the waiver not be granted. It’s hard to go down that road, but I do think it’s something you should be weighing as you move forward. Congratulations on your scholarship award!

Thanks for the help, I was rereading my remedial exam packet, and the second option was to do it at a military installation for no cost if they are able to provide all the remedial service I need. Wright Patt AFB is pretty close to me so would that also be a good option?

Definitely worth a try, but I have heard it may be hard to schedule with them, and you need to be able to get on base ok. I would pursue all options at this point, check with CIV team again next week. You can always cancel appointments if something better comes through, but I do think it’s time to go ahead and get something scheduled.

My son's dates are identical. He had DOD merb exam in December. He has a one condition medical exception and has received the Type 1 AFROTC scholarship. He tells me not to worry. He has 2 nominations (Senator and MOC) He uploaded information for the scholarship and they pumped out the same letter they did in January but the portal still says under waiver review. He's moving forward with accepting the scholarship to see if that will push the DODmerb at all, but still holding out hope for both the AF and Naval Academies medical waivers. I just reached out to his doctor to write a letter even though it hasn't been requested, just trying to do anything we can to advance this.

Hi. My DS in similar situation. My DS has also be under waiver review since 01/27 with USAFA and USNA for 2 DQs. He also received DQs notice from AFROTC 03/14 but they replied back for AMI request 03/20. Tried scheduling remedial appts with DODMETS today and now they are saying the next available for my area is a month away. My concern is if SAs WAs request for AMIs comes now then dr appts wont be til mid Apr. Anyone else in th same situation with concerns being under waiver review this late in the timeframe and the possiblity of AMIs being requested this late too? Seems like AFROTC replied way quicker or is SAs WA that backlogged. May think about going to MTF or private dr in case AMIs form SAs come up but don't wanto to jump the gun. True that AFROTC Type 1 scholarships can actually wait for remidial AMIs?

Anyone in the Los Angeles Area have the same DODMETS issues with getting providers scheduled for remedials? Called and right now they are saying over a month for provider in LA area. Appox 2 weeks for provider in San Jose area. Not sure if trip would be worth the time frame for AFROTC Type1 Scholarship since it wouldn't kick in til after 1 semester of freshman year.

What is CIV team?
"The Department of Defense Medical Exam Testing System (DoDMETS) is the medical exam tracking system operated by CIV Team to assist Department of Defense Applicants in scheduling and completing their medical requirements for DoDMERB." (from DoDMets website)

We just went through this with AMI in Colorado. 2 1/2 months for Dodmets provider appointment. He kept calling and was able to get a cancellation a month sooner. We called private physicians and they were scheduled about 6 weeks out in our area. Some wouldn’t even take him without a referral even though we said we were private pay. So a month isn’t too bad. If you are wanting to be prepared for the SA waivers you want to get the remedials done as soon as possible. If you are only working towards his ROTC approval then I’m not sure if two weeks earlier is that critical. The sooner he gets that done the more he can relax knowing he’s in good shape with his ROTC school choice. Some kids end up at schools they can’t afford without the scholarship,
their waivers don’t come through for a long time, or not at all, and they have to make some tough decisions. So encourage him to choose a school he’s good with either way.

I just replied, but it didn't go directly under your question.

I'm so sorry to hear about your situation. Personally, I would accept the offer for the appt a month away. I know it's late but if your DS is truly passionate and about ROTC, it would be the best choice. If I remember correctly, my local ROTC representative told me I could accept the AFROTC Type 1 scholarship but I would need the waiver by the time the first semester begins for the scholarship money to be given. This gives a much more generous time frame than the SAs but as you said, the SAs seem to be taking their sweet time deciding on waivers so that's still up in the air.

In my case, a provider found an ophthalmologist in Columbus for me this week. So finally, after they almost hit the 30-day deadline, I got an appt scheduled in two weeks so good news for me there. If there's hope for me there's certainly hope for your DS. I wish both of you the best.
