Hey everyone, I am a 16 year old junior in high school and I want to go to the Air Force Academy. I have spoken with a school counselor and have started getting the ball rolling and will start my nomination letter shortly. I am looking for advice to what I can do to make myself more competetive to be accepted. As of now I have a 3.375 GPA, but I will graduate with a 3.5-3.6 GPA. I have only taken the ACT once, I am enrolled in and have started a prep. class for the ACT, and I recieved a 26. I know that I need at least a 30 to 31, which I know is possible and I will do. I will have four years of competetive Golf and Lacrosse. I am wondering is there anything you can recommend that I can still do to improve my chances of getting into the academy?

Thank you for your help.

Of course, read the website: www.academyadmissions.com. But also, leadership in any form is important to have and to stress on the application. Extracurriculars that you have focused on and show consistency is more important than having many. Lacrosse is probably more favorably looked at than golf although golf IS one of those things that officers benefit from in a social sense. The Academy has a nice course. Could you be a captain of your lacrosse team? That would be big. Keep working on the ACT and keep the grades up and you'll probably be fine, IMO.

Thanks for the help. Also, I know joining CAP or JROTC would really help with the leadership and that sort of thing. Would it be possible for me to join now and would that really help? I'm not sure because i'm already a junior.

I would concentrate on an area in which you already excel. Unless you feel that you can't get a leadership position at school, on the lacrosse team or on the golf team, I would try for one of those instead of something new.

Yes, I understand what your saying, but I was asking because there is no "captain" or anything liek that in golf. And for lacrosse while there kind of is one I most likely won't be it. I'm a starter, but I don't know if I will be the captain, which we really haven't even had a captain lacrosse has only been a sport at my school since I wa a freshman and it was a clufor 2-3years before.
