Loss of a Brigade mate

Woke up to hopes it was a rumor, but now confirmed. Keep these friends, family and brigade mates in your prayers. This is so soon. So hard. Such sadness. RIP

Not freaking out. But the reality of the fact that life is never certain. Never given. Does hit particularly hard today.

Maybe it the close familial feel to USNA, but I dont recall these experiences with my older kiddos at regular college. This hits deep, despite me not knowing any of them personally. Maybe it’s because my Mid does. Not sure, but I was ‘prepared’ for the thought of loss of life in service to country. Not prepared for the loss of classmates in school. 3 in a short period. Maybe that’s it. But I hurt for the Brigade today. And my Mid.

And the family of this Midshipmen.

Prayers for peace.
 
Thoughts and Heartfelt Prayers go out to the family and the entire USNA family! ANY loss is tragic, whether it in battle, competition, or by accident. As others have said, life is precious but we never know when our time is up, but those lost this year it is far too soon!
 
Sigh. My first text this AM from the Yard, but my sadness is nothing to the family with plans in place to travel for graduation, who probably have a CACO and chaplain in their living room right now, who are shocked and grieving at the loss of a beloved child. The midshipman’s friends, roommates, classmates, teammates, company mates, staff and faculty will also be deeply saddened by the loss of a Navy family member. As always, they will pull together and do what is right and proper, in the Navy way, with respect and honor to the lost shipmate.

I always take solace in music, so with a heavy heart, and for the second time in as many weeks, I’ll post a version of “Eternal Father,” the Navy Hymn. I never fail to let a few tears fall when I hear it. Let the healing begin.

You are right "justdoit19" freaking out was not the correct response! Just hearing this news this morning is so upsetting. We have developed so many relationships with my sons fellow classmates and parents over the years you feel like they are all family and one of your own. Every midshipmen is like a son/daughter to you and it just breaks my heart that another one has passed way too early. I pray for this midshipmen family, friends, the Brigade, the leadership... we all mourn together.
 
At our first state level Parent's Club meeting they made a point to say how close families and mids classmates/roommates can become. They also mentioned, as way of preparation, the possibility of Mids passing, an inevitable part of life and very impactful in such a close community

You paint such a thorough picture with your words. I think we can all put ourselves into this position, if not from actual experience, then from the love of parenting, loving a friend. It hits the soul. I wish I could be there for people. In the background, supporting however it’s needed. I know they have that covered. But our basic instinct is to help. And I feel so helpless.....

was on a tour today because DD attending CVW. Noticed the Navy flag but not US flag at 1/2 staff so was curious and asked guide. He said due to midshipman from last night... heart hoes out to the family and friends
 
SECNAV can, I believe, put Navy flag at half-staff. For the US flag, I think it’s the President for the nation and Governors for their state.
 
DD was hurting a bit last week from MIDN Carillo’s passing, so her company officer advised her to visit a counselor. She happened to schedule an appointment for this morning. It was a crowded waiting room, as the Brigade mourned another loss. As DD told me, “It’s been a very tough Dark Ages.”
