My graduated high school in June and was awarded a 3 yr minuteman scholarship. Since he was already in National guard split ops he had already completed basic training. He was sent to AIT this past summer with a graduation in late September. He was told to delay college until the spring of 2025 and the scholarship was set to begin fall 2025. Well he wound up get reclassed at AIT and is now waiting to begin another AIT class. He currently has no idea when the AIT will begin and is worried he will be late for the spring semester. Can he lose the scholarship if he returns late? He is being told yes if he is not back the day the semester begins he will lose a 3 yr scholarship to a private college. He is devastated and really cannot get much information. Does anyone know who he could contact . It almost seems he would’ve been better off without prior service before rotc and he is getting penalized for attending training.

I really don’t know much about this but I thought he would have been part of the SMP program on that scholarship meaning AIT would not be necessary. My daughter was investigating NG and scholarships and it seemed like no one fully knew what they were talking about. She did talk to a lady that handles scholarships. Maybe he could find that person in your state?

You are so right about this. No one did know the answer and they went back and forth about this for months whether he needed to go to ait or not and eventually it was decided that he did because they stated it was part of his original national guard contract that he had to do ait within a year. He did have other friends though that are also doing rotc that were told the rotc contract superseded the old contract and ait was waived.

It may also have to do with the fact that he has a 3 yr minuteman scholarship and not a 4 so the scholarship does not begin until sophomore year.
