Low ACT test score

@Just Dad loved reading the post. I know, to a certain extent, how your daughter feels. My older brother scored a 35 composite and 2390 SAT in 8TH GRADE, and got into MIT at age 16. I have to put in hours and hours of work just to get close to those scores, however I have always been more talented athletically. We just have different skills sets. Hard work can get you places!

Just Dad; great post! Congrats on the two upcoming launches! I hope you will consider being a part of the Washington USNA parents club community for some great plebe year support. With respect to SAT/ACT prep, we are taking the midsib through Jean Burke's college prep genius 2 day seminar. Juniors should go register today at college board for both the May and June SAT now in the new penalty free format as they fill up quickly.

My son never took a course. He just had a couple prep books and did timed practice test sections, then reviewed his answers after each section. Before two of his ACT exams he studied hard, and the other two he didn't study quite as diligently due to time constraints. He improved up to six points on some sections, and at least a couple on every section.

Keep in mind, if a kid takes the test multiple times, that is over the course of a year or two. They learn more in school during that period, and then also get more comfortable with the ACT format each time they take it. And just improving one or two sections per test makes a big difference. At USNA they only have to focus on math and English.

Standardized tests measure general knowledge you learn all through h.s. While it is good to know the types of questions, how these tests are structured, how to manage your time, etc. as others mentioned above, I would be wary of anyone trying to sell you tips/tricks/coaching with some implied 'guarantee' of improving your scores. If you aren't good at math all throughout h.s., it will probably show when you take the SAT/ACT and no amount of tips/tricks will change that.

time2, I appreciate your opinion. My DS has historically done very well in advanced math. He also has always done very well in English and is currently taking Honors English 11. He is just struggling with the English part of the ACT, having taken it twice and gotten 20 and 22. That is mystifying to me. He has also always struggled some with reading, and has scored 20. Very very low. That is our particular issue.
