Helping my DD with final packing and have a question. What socks are worn with the low quarters, thin black dress socks? Want to make sure we pack the right item. Thanks.

Yes, thin black socks are worn. But, I would not worry about packing any because they issue new cadets several pairs on R-Day.

I would put extra effort into socks: black socks for low quarters, white socks for PT and wool socks for boots. This just an opinion based on Pluck feedback.

Definitely bring at least a few "good" pairs of socks for each uniform. Number 1 rule is to take care of your feet.

You might want to see what your needs are before buying too much. My son actually liked the thin black issued socks (worn the low quarters). They sell them at the C store on post quite cheaply (if memory serves me right, they were $1 two years ago.). We met a cadet at the C store when we were there buying his boots and low quarters and we spoke with a cadet who was shopping there and he said that the black issued socks were fine, so my son just got those and he's been happy with them.

They also sell boot socks at the C store, so if you cadet needs more boot socks, they can be easily obtained.

Just send them to your daughter in mail so that way she doesn't haven't to carry around extra weight...As well as any other items. It makes a world of a difference, especially when you're carrying around a heavy bag on a long summer day while trying to take instruction and report and all that R-day Jazz. They will already be issued some the first day as well.

Did you do this with your Plebe? I thought Cadet candidates could not receive packages during beast, only letters. I know my DS would not appreciate the extra attention if I stuffed socks in his envelope. Maybe I misunderstood?

From what I've been told, you need permission to recieve packages and that only comes after a few weeks.

I was in BEAST last year and my parents sent me a package with extra underwear, socks, etc. it wasn't a huge package but it had some extra things I needed. I told my SL that I was expecting a package that had some necessities and when we went to check mail, we would pick up the package together. They briefly looked through it for contraband and then gave it to me. I knew a kid that got a package a good amount of times. (Note: sometimes this depends on your SL, some might let you continue to get packages while others will cut it off after the first one. Don't go crazy with the boxes and don't take advantage by adding snacks or unathorized items. I sent myself some stuff before I arrived and when I went to check for the first time, they were there. Try to use the smallest type of packaging possible so it can fit in or be squished into the PO Box. Large hard boxes have to be picked up at the mail counter and sometimes the workers aren't there which further delays the process of getting the package. Just my advice. but if your DD doesn't want to risk it and is willing to carry a lot, it is really only a day so she should be fine in the end. There really isn't extra attention associated with mail. You really only check it as a squad and unless you're sending grandmas cookies and a homemade sweater, then your SL probably won't harp on it. Again this is just my experience and advice on it but do whatever makes feels comfortable.
