Just heard back from cadre and Ranger challenge team captain that I made the team as a starter!

Question is what is it like to be a freshman on the Ranger Challenge Team? Since I’m a MS1, I don’t know much and still decently new to the Army stuff

Congratulations, the teams are required to have a member from each class, getting the freshman slot is a great opportunity. The team will have it's own training schedule and there will be time for them to teach you what you'll need to know. Really hit the physical training and endurance, that will be the biggest plus to start. Being the freshman on the team will give you more training on things like Land Nav and tactics then you would just being a MS1. Take advantage of all the extra training and good luck.

Thank you, sir

Well done. This will give you valuable exposure to the leaders and "high-speed" cadets of your battalion, and vice versa. It will put additional demands on your time and energy. Conversely, you will probably not have to schedule independent workouts, unlike your fellow cadets who find the morning PT insufficient.

Make sure you have decent running shoes, as well as good boots and socks for your ruck march practices. I don't know if you'll be doing any rope climbing, but make sure you have gloves. (My son didn't on his first climb, slid down the rope - bad technique - and suffered for three weeks until his severely scraped hands healed).

Most important: do not let your grades suffer! RC team and a high GPA will make a favorable impression on cadre.

Not sure why you are asking random strangers what the Ranger Challenge experience will be like at your particular school. There are 8 Brigades who each conduct their competition a little differently, and each of the 270+ schools all train in their own way.

The one piece of advice that does pertain, and I will echo is don’t let your grades suffer. Ranger team is great, but if your GPA tanks your one rope bridge stories won’t help you earn a commission.

Don’t worry, I have a light course load. Thank you for your concern

It's a great experience and hopefully your school will do well in the competitions. Both my kids competed in RC as freshmen and I believe my son competed all 4 years. His junior year, the team took 1st place for their brigade and the team went back to West Point to compete. Going to West Point and being able to run their obstacle course was one of the highlights of his time in ROTC.

I am also a MSI who made the Ranger Challenge team. It’s obviously hard as a freshman but just show everyone you deserve to be there, and the rest will come with time.
