Hi,

I have read about both of these majors on the USNA website but I was wondering if anyone who knows about the quantitative economics or computer science majors would be willing to share their experiences and identify careers in and out of the Navy that these majors have led to. Thank you very much for your help!

2020 Mid here.

You will have plenty of time and opportunities during the Ac Year to ask your upperclassmen about majors.

The Class of 2020 selected their majors today - I put mine is as aerospace.

As for careers in the Navy: Your major does not matter for the 99% of service selections!

An English major from USNA may service select Submarines and they will still attend Nuclear Power School and become a submarine officer.

I have a Firstie in my company who is majoring in Oceanography and she is going Marine Ground.

The only service selection that I can think of that "unofficially" requires a specific major is Navy Medical. Even then, there are cases of Poli-Sci majors receive Navy Medical assignments this year.

I cannot speak for careers outside of the Navy.

Navy Medical definitely does not require a specific major. Then do have to take extra classes for a "pre med" type track.

If you're trying to select SWO-EDO, or if you get NPQ and want to go CEC, you do need an engineering degree. Not positive for SWO-EDO, but I know with CEC you're also required to take the FE.

That being said, unless you end up as one of those cases don't worry about it. Major in something you're going to have fun with and do well at. You have a much higher chance of getting your service selection doing something you enjoy because consequently you'll probably get better grades.

Ok, I'm new here but do know about the acronym list and find none of these on it. What do you mean?

If you haven't done this yet, go to USNA.edu, read every page, drop down and link. Navy officer career paths out of USNA are described. Googling "Navy warfare officer careers" should bring up navy.com, the official Navy recruiting site. Be sure you are looking at officer options.

Since I am feeling Siri-like:
SWO Surface Warfare Officer
EDO Engineering Duty Officer, an optional path after obtaining SWO qualification on ships
NPQ Not physically qualified
CEC Civil Engineering Corps
F? Exam?

SWO = Surface Warfare Officer
EDO = Engineering Duty Officer
NPQ = Not Physically Qualified
CED = Civil Engineering Corps

Not sure what the FE is but sounds like some sort of engineering exam.

Fundamentals of Engineering Exam. It is required to become a professional licensed engineer (PE).

Oh yes, of course, had a good friend SWO-EDO who sat for that.

So after your first reply I read up on SWO and what all that entails. Made me think of Master and Commander teaching young men to be good seaman..

The Information Warfare communities (IWC) prefers STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) majors over non-STEM. If you are considering IWC as a potential service selection, you also might want to consider a STEM major.

COMDTMIDNINST 1301.1 ("INFORMATION WARFARE COMMUNITY [IWC] SCREENER"):
Academic major- STEM-related studies are preferred; however completion of other studies will be considered. Academic QPR with specific attention to grades in Calculus and Physics will also be considered.
