Majors

I have held the brain, very fun! :)

BS major is considered a fun one and a good one. Not too stressful, but you can get good stuff about it. Consider though, what you would do with it if you had to become a civilian after 5 years. Can you see it in your future?

Mike

Potter is a BS major. I always thought she would do one of the Engineering majors. She studied engineering at a special High School, and had already completed several college level Eng courses. I held my tounge when she chose it because like Hornet said what happens if you five and dive. Turns out she was probably a lot smater then me as usual though. She has learned that she really enjoys Public Affairs (her radio show has been part of this), and the BS major is a good fit. I have a friend that owns a major ad agency in Denver who has asked her to come by and check things out, and she is happy with her decision.

Totally agree. The thing I have to keep in mind about my son; nothing against my daughter or any other child/student; is that if they are smart enough, dedicated enough, self assured enough, and disciplined enough to apply/get accepted/graduate from the Air Force Academy; then they are probably ALL THE ABOVE enough to decide what college major they want to take. I've learned that instead of giving an OPINION of what I think he should do; I instead ask questions. I.e. "Wow; that sounds like a great major. Do you think it can come in useful if you decide not to stay in the Air Force". Put the ball back in their court so they can decide for themselves. Maybe he says yes; maybe he rethinks it. But I trust him. I made a LOT OF MISTAKES in my life. I've got to let him make all his own mistakes. (This is NOT to say a Beh. Science degree is a mistake. My 1st degree was in Psychology. I loved it.) It didn't come in very helpful later on, for ME, so I also have degrees in Electronic Engineering and Computer science, but that was part of my growing up and making decisions. later... mike...

Yes, aero is one of the tougher majors...very heavy into applied sciences. My roommate is an aero major, and constantly works.

BS can be good. Sometimes the department gets a little hung up on terminology and theories (especially for the core classes--the techie majors can get frustrated sometimes).

I'll still take my history major, thank you. The downside is a lot of reading and papers, but I generally like the topics.

Hey raimius, I was thinking about doing a history major. By far my favorite subject. I am more into military history though. Besides reading and papers, could you tell more about it?

Management Major all the way!! I'm gunna own a casino after twenty years in the AF :thumb:

I think he meant what he wanted to study.

Matt that sounds like an awesome major. There are so many cool things to get from the academy(ies), but such little time to even scratch the list.

Ah, I see now. Is anyone here majoring/planning on majoring in MSS?

did you get to hold the human brain at the seminar?

Haha yes, I did! Very cool! "Training" the rats to run in circles was rather entertaining also!

Another major question, er question on majors. What major (just theoretically), would be of most use after the Air Force? I'm sure there are many depending on what you want to do, but which one would you be able to do the MOST with?

Depends on what you want to do. Something I like about the chem major is I can go to med school, law school, or go to grad school and study any engineering, physics, biology, etc. The world is still wide open for me.

History has three tracks: general, American, and military. Various classes fulfill track requirements, plus there are a few classes that are required for every history major. The "average" class has a book review, a few GRs, some quizes, a term paper, and a final...plus readings for each lesson. The amount of total work varies by teacher and class.

MSS is well liked by every MSS major I've talked too (not too many, but...)
I really enjoyed the core MSS class, but military history had more classes that I wanted to take.

If you can hold your grades up ok, then Biochemistry (chemistry major) is the better bet. But do what you LIKE and WANT to do, not what will get you a better shot at Med school. You will be happier and thus do better at the major you WANT to do.

Exactly, I plan on majoring in biology and perhaps go into medical school later if I can't become a pilot. I love biology and I couldn't see myself majoring in anything else.:thumb:

Only consideration is that test pilot school requires a technical major. Otherwise, couldn't matter less. If I get my pilot slot, I'll be a chem major. Unless you ask me about the engine fuels, probably couldn't tell you much more, nor would it matter so much.

what majors fall under the "technical" category. because i am really interested in test piloting/astronaut along with becoming a fighter pilot

thanks

In order to become a test pilot, you must have an engineering degree I believe. Aerospace or Aeronautical would be the ones you would be looking for. Aerospace more so, though, since you want to be an astronaut.
