My DS received 2 noms to USNA but WP wouldn’t open his portal due to low SAT/ACT scores. When and how are appointments to MAPS made? His goal since elementary school has been WP and he was crushed when they wouldn’t open his application portal.

Those that are offered USMAPS are generally athletes, soldiers and URMs.

Not knowing your DS's scores it is hard to determine why his portal was not opened except that he didn't meet the threshold to have it opened which is based on test scores and transcripts. In fairness to the candidate, WP will not open a portal unless they are a competitive candidate.

Your son has the option to go to college and apply next year to WP. He should prep for the ACT and SAT and then take and retake them both AND make good grades in college. About 25% of every class at WP are not straight out of high school. Many are re-apps. Good luck to him. :thumb:

Write your admissions officer and ask them to consider you for USMAPS. Make sure you include your leadership experiences in the email as well as your scores. Be prepared for them to turn you down and be prepared to apply again next year.

SAT Scores

A fellow USMAPS guy had terrible SAT scores, but great in all other areas. They sent him to USMAPS (1981). He ended up being in the top 5% of our USMA class. It was a shame they didn't put more weight on his non SAT areas. I did ok on SATs and struggled academically most of the time.

Also, mention to your FFR that you would be interested in the civil prep scholarship. Do some research on the USMA's Associate of Graduates Civil Prep option. Personally, I believe it is the next best thing to an appointment. My DS is finishing up his 1 year at MMI and is prepping for his appointment to WP.
