Still Waiting

Congrats to all; we are still waiting..hopefully the mailman will be delivering the news today.

April Appointments

Coastie for Life,
We are right there with you. Today WILL be the day hopefully.

today is the 15th of April and I recieved in the mail.....

NOTHING

what should I expect, our mailman is always slow.....
if by the 16th there is no response, I'm calling admissions...

I just have no luck.....

following up....

So, in my period of downheartedness and impatience, I called my admission officer...

And we can (half) rejoice.

"your application is still being reviewed, .... basically you're on the line...."

A small light of hope is renewed. (I at first viewed it as a long shot for me to get in. Although my grades were pretty good and all (gpa 3.7 etc) and lots of after school activities, the area of leadership positions were thin.)

So now I can wait for the next week and so for the letter with my fateful decision.
(I mean, hey, at least they have the application )

following up

Did you apply to anyother SA? Just curious if you did and what your decision will be.

no, surprisingly, it was coast guard or nothing for me
although as a kid i loved the army, and I admire the hell out of Marines.
But the coast guard had a special something there that I didn't see in the others. Probably the Law enforcement aspect and the rescues etc...

if i don't get into the CGA, I'll be going to the University of DE with Mech Eng.
and i figure (if applications of the next few years don't go) I would go in through an officer training program.... I need to do more research on those....

I've got some time to worry about that later though....

Keep in touch your admissions officer, don't give up hope, appointment notifications keep going out until May 1 (and even later to fill in the ones who decline in late April).

Don't settle for another service when the CG is what you want. You've made a great choice and have great reasons for wanting it.

so, i was thinking of checking my mail before i took a nap....

so, i sign on to my mail and what do I see...

SURPRISE! YOU'VE BEEN WAIT LISTED

better than being denied flat outright!

so, i'm all in the wonder on what to do now while waiting... (with my backup college and all)

so, there is still hope!

(oh, and for those that wonder what the email really said....)

Greetings from New London!

This e-mail is an official notification that you have been placed on the
waiting list for an appointment to the Class of 2012. If you are no
longer interested in an appointment to the Coast Guard Academy, please
let me know by replying to this e-mail. Conversely, if you are willing
to accept a late appointment, should spots in the class become available
after May 1st, please reply no later than April 22nd to confirm your
desire to remain in consideration. Please let me know if you have any
questions or concerns about your wait-list status.

Sincerely,

LCDR Chris McMunn
Associate Director for Processing
U.S. Coast Guard Academy Admissions

I will be heading to Washington DC for my next assignment, which believe it or not, is what I wanted to do.

The billet wasn't on my wish list, which would usually be a bad thing, but it is an O-3 billet, and I'm an O-2...thus explaining why it was never an option.

I am happy with it though. Call came at 9PM...but it came on the day the message said, so I can't complain!

wait list

As a professor at a public school I would recommend that you keep your application active at your "backup" school. Sometimes you can get them to extend their deadlines, but if not, consider paying the deposit to hold a spot. But if you do end up getting into the Academy, promptly inform the backup school so that they can give that spot to a wait listed student.

As far as the Academy goes, if they operate like other schools, you never know if and when you might get in. As accepted cadets either accept or decline admission spots probably open up. And you would be surprised how far down a "wait list" they might go. Some applicants will give up when wait listed, others will decide that they don't want to attend. Don't give up just because your on a wait list.

If you are really serious, I suggest writing to your CGA admission officer and telling him/her how interested you are and that you would be willing to accept an appointment at any time. Even the week before R-day! But only tell them this if you really mean it.

And if you don't get in, don't give up! Try next year......consider OCS. If your goal is to get into the USCG as an officer there are a couple of paths. A little persistence, communication and luck can go a long way.

I hope it works out.

Mike

Wait List

My dd received the same email as rjcuga. It is a lot to think about. She has a strong desire to attend the CGA as well as her back up school (which is another service academy).

Good luck to all and Semper Paratus

Great post: I can tell you that appointments continue after May 1st. This is the date that those appointed have to either accept or decline.
To submit a deposit to a backup school is a good plan. I do know a cadet who received an appointment to the class of 2011 on May 18th 2007.

If you are on the wait list for the CGA and have an appointment for another SA you are forced to make a bigger decision. It is quite different than just making a deposit to hold your slot.

Good luck to all who hold hope for the appointment to come!

LITS, many congrats on getting a post in Washington, DC! :thumb: Does this mean you are getting promoted to O-3?

And rjcuga and Coastie for Life's daughter, it is not over until its over! Congrats on getting on the USCGA waitlist!

No, no O-3 yet. It's a domino effect. They have some openings for O-4 billets...so they use O-3's to fill those positions. This of course leaves some openings in O-3 billets, so they use O-2s to fill those.

It would be nice to get that O-3 BAH for the DC area though, but alas, that will not happen.

I'm looking forward to it though.

Also, with regard to the waitlist, do not give up hope.

I had a classmate that found out the day before R-day that he made it in. He showed up late, as was expected. Anything could happen!

No waitlist email...?

Congrats to those still in the running. We did NOT get the waitlist email, so that doesn't look good for our DS. We were told, however, by another 2012 hopeful who talked to her admission's officer, that two batches of letters were going out, one batch on the 15th, and another on May 1. No info on whether or not the letters were rejections or appointments though. Now we wonder, wait and wait some more.

Shellz keep faith, there are many people who graduated from the SA's that got late notices.

LITS,
Congrats on the new job. Bullet and I are moving back in the summer to the DC area (we live on the VA side) I am a realtor so if you need any help or direction just PM me.
Take your gf to Laubeurge (Great Falls or Vienna) for a very special date...will cost you @200 for the night, but it is so worth it!. They were actually in one of the Visa commercials...they don't take American Express!. They have 2 seatings per night, and the service is amazing(drop your napkin and before you can reach for it somebody has already placed in your lap!)

Welcome to the Puzzle Palace, and by the Slug book at the Pentagon...believe it or not they do have etiquette rules on how to slug:eek:

Ha, that's kind of funny that they have a whole book on slugging. What job are you taking in DC, LITS?

Thanks Pima. I've gotta believe that he will end up where he is supposed to be. All of my worrying really isn't doing much, is it now? :shake:

I got a letter in the mail today saying that I was offered a conditional appointment. I need to get a medical waiver for surgery that I had when I was 2 years old. I'm still waiting to hear from USAFA.
