About MARGRAD, if you're not from those maritime academies and graduated from Villanova, United States Naval Academy, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University, any of the schools at http://www.sname.org/communities1/studentsections etc,
you go to OCS only?

Be a graduate of one of the seven maritime academies:
Maine Maritime Academy
Massachusetts Maritime Academy
United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point
State University of New York Maritime College
Great Lakes Maritime Academy
Texas Maritime Academy
California Maritime Academy

Hi, In order to qualify for the MARGRAD program you must graduate with a mariner's license from one of the state maritime academies or USMMA. To graduate with a license requires an education in a regimented environment. Therefore, you are correct. Any other school (not just the one listed in your link) would mean you go through OCS.

There is also the CSPI program, which will pay for your last two years of college, but has requirements regarding which colleges you may attend those two years. If either of these programs interests you, and you would like more information than is found at gocoastguard.com, send me a PM. I will reach out to a recruiter who has been involved in CSPI especially.

I'm not sure of the details, but I believe direct commission is a different accession path than MARGRAD. If I understand the VMI website they do not offer a maritime license.

You may want to check with the Coast Guard too. Just because VMI's website says something, doesn't mean it's true or up-to-date. I'm not saying VMI is lying, just saying things change. So either the Coast Guard left it off (which should be corrected) or VMI incorrectly added it (which should also be corrected).

The third option.... we're just looking in the wrong places for the answers. HA!

MARGRAD and direct commission programs are not the same thing. I BELIEVE MARGRAD is a type of direct commission, but I know not all direct commissions are MARGRAD.

I found it at http://www.gocoastguard.com/active-...irect-commission-selected-school-dcss-program
  • Must have a baccalaureate or higher from one of the following schools and have been a participating member of the corps of cadets, ROTC, or equivalent regimented program:
    • The Citadel
    • Mary Baldwin College, Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership
    • North Georgia College & State University
    • Norwich University
    • Prairie View A&M University
    • Texas A&M University
    • Virginia Military Institute
    • Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Hopefully I can help clear the air a bit! SpadGuy is correct. The program that VMI has with the Coast Guard is called Direct Commission Selected Schools. While you can obtain a direct commission through VMI, it will not be through the MARGRAD program as VMI is not a maritime academy. Both MARGRAD and Direct Commission Selected Schools fall under the direct commission program umbrella along with Direct Commission Aviator, Direct Commission Engineer, Direct Commission Lawyer, etc.
