Good Afternoon All;
I am not sure where else to post this on the forum--for rising high school juniors and seniors--so current sophomores and juniors. Below is the link to the application for the Marine Corps' Summer Leadership & Character Development Academy which is a nationally competitive, one week training program held in Quantico focused on leadership, ethics, and community service with an inspirational amount of groovy Marine 'stuff' threaded throughout the week. The week takes advantage of being located close to the DC area so the kids learn from and engage with senior leaders and Great American heroes, attend a Sunset Parade, visit the Holocaust Museum, and other thought provoking locations. There is also a day of community service--and morning PT!

This program had a tremendous impact on my #3 (current cadet).

Also it does not conflict with NASS or SLE.

Definitely worth applying and attending if selected.

Dr. Mom,
I think this will get more views under the "Service Academy Parents" Forum.

Thank you @AROTC-dad
This is such a great program. I feel so indebted to the Marine Corps.
Every year I try to share the application link as broadly as possible--and I am happy to answer any questions.

Dear @EOD/SEALmom . The application is a big undertaking (transcript, picture, essay—hmmm seems familiar....) but the program is marvelous. There is a Facebook page with lots of pictures of the kids doing cool things like driving simulators and doing parts of the leader’s reaction course and visiting sites in DC and doing community service. I hope it works out!

Wow thanks for sharing! Our middle son is a freshman, he will be very interested in this for next summer. Any advice about activities the board likes to see kids in? Our oldest son is waiting on medical - he has an LOA for USNA.! He had never heard of this program.

Dear. @USNAmom22 best wishes for your senior! The waiting is it’s own challenge. Early days!
I do not have any insight into the selection board requirements. I strongly suspect that they love geographic diversity so that it is not all NoVA kids.
Thanks for the feedback and good luck!

Dr. Mom,

I don't think the program is restricted to young people who hope to attend an academy. It's open to all regardless of the commissioning route they hope to take or even those who don't intend to commission (don't know if anything shows up on the application regarding commissioning intentions though). I'm sure you were aware of this but wanted to make sure it's known to lurkers and future readers of this thread.

You are absolutely right @kinnem. The program is not aimed for Service Academy applicants. It is aimed for kids who wish to become leaders and to serve their community. When #3 attended, he noticed that he was surrounded by other young men and women who happened to be applying to the Naval Academy.many were coming out of NAS. He was a rising junior at the time but many others were rising senior. It is just a great way to learn about leadership, ethics, community service with some really amazing Marine Corps stuff thrown in.

DrMom... My DS finished and sent his application, missing recommendation letters, to this point. Any idea if DS will send the letters or the person he ask to write him the letter. DS was given a copy of the letter but not sign. DS profile still says no recommendation letters. Is the packing similar to Academy Summer? Since he also applied for AIM. Already going to NASS, SLE, Florida Boys State (got application under consideration in AFSS). Marine Summer application is like the Academy applications... he is my DS#2 we know the drill. Being in small private school helps, coaches and counselors are eager to help. DS#1 is now sophomore in Coast Guard Academy!

I'm sure that if your DS is accepted that they will send him a packing list. It's the military after all. I doubt very much that it will be like an Academy Summer. It's a very different environment with trips to DC etc. Sorry I can't help with the recommendation letters but if a contact phone number is provided in the application it would be worth a call. Good luck to your DS.

@MJ2020 Good Evening, Just seeing this now--if you put the @ sign in front of my name I would have seen your question immediately.
As for the letters, you upload them directly. They are not blinded letters so just submit them as part of your child's packet.
If he is accepted he will get full details on what to pack and where to be and how to get there. (It is the Marine Corps--not a lot of mystery.)
But yes, the SCLDA application is a LOT like an academy application--down to the essay and the photo--and the modified PT test. It is a great experience to get ready for applying to a service academy and SCLDA is full of kids who wish to go on and apply to the SAs and ROTC programs...and not just for the Marine Corps.
There are a few new videos on the Facebook page for SCLDA, I hope you are able to find them.

I am so glad your child is applying. I feel like our family owes the SCLDA team so much. It was a thrilling wake up call for my youngest cadet.

@DrMom My DS is not too fund of FB! But I think, I’m going to ask few questions over there. I been reading good outcomes from other DS’ n DD’s. An alumni SCLDA DD got accepted to NA, WP, n CGA, this year. My DS application was completed but it’s not showing if it’s been sent! just found out that my DS has direct contact from SCLDA admissions office since 2 weeks ago. Thx

TBS is not like Summer School at Marine Summer School . Still worth attending and they will find every tree and stream in Quantico.

DS is accepted company “A” from Florida! Who’s joining the class of SCLDA2018?
