Marines Gaining Annapolis Grads

There have been several studies which indicate that USNA grad Naval Officers perform to a higher standard than non-academy procurement sources. I wonder if the same applies for the USMC grads, given the great equalizer of Basic School?

I also thought the retention statistics were interesting. 85% continue beyond initial obligation. Higher than they want and will commence making retention more demanding.

"We have had an increase in retention and a decrease in attrition," he said, with 85 percent of officers renewing their contracts.

"To be honest with you, that's actually more than we need," Tosick said.

To date, he said, all qualified officers who choose to remain in the service have been kept on, but it's likely that "starting next year, we're going to add a little more competitiveness."

Can we all say RIF or xtrain:eek:

This is probably a dumb question -
What happens if a USNA grad commissions as a 2nd Lt Marine and then washes out of TBS?
Does he/she go back to the Navy?

No idea, JAM, probably enlisted Marines.

This entire article is fascinating. Increase the numbers of gung-ho grads who can go Marine Corps and then kick them out at the end of their initial commitment due to an increased performance standard. The Corps is a very 'lean' organization with a higher ratio of junior to senior officers than the other services. They have always been a year or so slower in promoting within the junior ranks than the other services. If this is still true, not sure, and they are rifing at the end of initial service obligation, I really don't see the need to increase percentages eligible to select Marine Corps.

Probably a corollary of the 'mystery' to which the following article refers:

I thought the ratio for company/field/flag was mandated...I am just wondering if each branch is allowed to detremine the percentage. I just recall that in the 90s during the RIF they stated they needed to reduce certain commission yrs to keep the percenatges in line, esp for the future promotions.

Q & A time. Here's the breakdown of incoming 2LTs currently:

PLC/OCC-35%
OCS- 24%
NROTC/MC-15%
USNA - 14%
Enlisted- 12%

TBS is not "Boot Camp". The people going to TBS are already commissioned by virtue of one of the above. NROTC/USNA are screened as a part of their two/four year stint with those institutions and the "Leatherneck" program. PLC/OCC and OCS are the screening process for candidates from civilian institutions. The Basic School will performance rate each of the 2LT's and that will have an impact on the path selection for the candidates.

As far as high retention. Look at the job market today!
