*this question is not about my child*

Query... what happens when a person at a private university on scholarship develops a life threatening (but recoverable with treatment) illness before graduation? 1. Does all tuition need to be paid back to the Marines? 2. Is it possible to pause until cured, resume and still commission?

Not to sound like a lawyer, but it will depend on the circumstances. If the injury or condition was in no way a result of poor behavior such as drinking or drug abuse, then repayment would be unlikely and if there was a full recovery, the scholarship might be reinstated following a leave of absence.

But if there was some negligence on the part of the scholarship recipient, then that can lead to recoupment of tuition.

It can get very tricky on issues surrounding anxiety or depression, so I would just say in those instances a person should discuss options with the cadre.

The illness is cancer.
Speaking very broadly, a recent history of cancer usually means a DQ on the commissioning physical. All is considered on a case basis. We had a USNA sponsor mid diagnosed with cervical cancer spring of her 2/c year, and it was caught early in a Pap smear and she was treated at Walter Reed successfully. Her clearance for commissioning went into the spring of 1/c year.

People disenrolled from commissioning programs are usually exempt from payback.
