Marion Military Institute Service Academy Prep

My DS self prepped for CGA last year and was waitlisted at KP and CGA but ultimately rejected. He knew he was close last year and decided to return and try again. He received appointment offers from both and chose Coast Guard last week. He did receive some scholarship help from MMI and it ultimately proved to be an excellent return on investment and fulfilled his dream since he was about 12.
DS has applied RD for CGA. Has been accepted at MMI as self-prep. For MMI - I've gone thru the entire website and still feel there's so much I don't know (I don't know what I don't know), and I don't know what to ask about. DS is senior, plays sports, involved in student government, volunteers time, among other things (no employment though). For a self-sponsored cadet at MMI, I would assume that the CGA would like to see them as involved as they were in high school - studies, extra-curricular, volunteer time, etc. Is that so? For example, if he were to stay with us, attend college, play sports (anything, not necessarily on college team), volunteer time, work, etc....wouldn't that same level of commitment be expected at MMI? I guess I am asking if the self-sponsored cadets also work or volunteer time in order to keep competitive with the other applications.

My DS is self sponsored at MMI currently. The MMI experience is different compared to a traditional college. They are preparing cadets for future military life and is very regimented. The rigor of courses mirror the academies- calculus, chemistry, physics, English comp, military science, and physical conditioning. They do have sports program but do not have all programs. There are opportunities for employment on campus and a cadet can work 10 hours a week and DS is employed by the school. There are numerous clubs to join which is strongly encouraged. My son actively volunteers in the community. All these activities help to make a better package. Depending on SAT/ACT scores you cadet may have to participate in mandatory study sessions to improve scores. They are pushed long and hard in the program. If you are considering MMI as an option I recommend touring the school and meeting with Col. Bowen.

If you haven't done so, contact LTC Bowen at Marion and maybe go visit MMI over spring break. Our son is in the SAP program at MMI. They have lots of clubs, sports, band, flying club and opportunities for employment as a life guard or tutor in the Student Academic Center.
