Marion Military Parent's Weekend: A hint

PS: The little Mexican place in Marion is wonderful! Their Shrimp Cocktail is my favorite of all-time: tons of shrimp and tons of avocado. All of the food we had there was wonderful

Just tried booking, Sleep Inn is full - Ugh! I see there is nothing else to speak of in Marion, any recommendations for other hotels? I guess next closest is Selma?
Yeah, Selma is the closest- but maybe (just maybe) there will be an AirBNB? Try that.

Also, keep trying the Sleep Inn- after my horrible experience at the other place, they were able to wheedle me in- they made a client for life in me with the way they helped me. Good luck!
Thanks!

How is Selma to stay in? It appears they have 5 hotels. Living in very populated South Florida, it’s hard to fathom a town only having a few hotels.

I have never been there, but had to look up the "scary" motel.

Wow.

"No, I'm okay. I'll sleep in the barn."

We are staying in Tuscaloosa. It's about 15 minutes further then Selma. It's a college town and a lot bigger then Selma.

I will check into it. I have a Facebook friend that lives near Selma and he didn’t have too many nice things to say about it.

When we visited MMI we drove over to Selma to check the city out and the city is fairly small. What we saw of the town we weren't impressed but I'm sure there are good motels, shopping and such.

Trust me when I say: stay in Tuscaloosa. In 2 years, we were always disappointed with Selma. No offense to anyone living there, but it is very depressed and hotels are sub par and there is no place to eat. Tuscaloosa is worth the drive.

So sad about Selma. Thought that might be an ok place to stay. My concern is where to take my son when I go for parents weekend. Tracking the Mexican place in Marion, thanks peppypea, any other suggestions? I know he won't be keen on trekking 30+ min away to go somewhere, although maybe he will have gained a whole new appreciation for mom by then :)

We visited the campus over spring break. Honestly, there is very little in Marion and everything closes very early. We ate at the Mexican restaurant and it was good but was the only restaurant open or still in existence. We tried to go to 4 other restaurants only to find them out of business. It's a very, very small town. I think the whole county only has around 4000-5000 people - it's very rural. I remember a Subway and a Hardees fast food restaurant. We tried to go for pizza and it was out of business. There was a listing for a family restaurant that was out business. The was a little diner on the main street going into town and it closed early. By default it was the Mexican restaurant because we didn't want fast food.

I know by the time parents weekend rolls around my kid will welcome a break from small town life.

If you do not want to drive far -I suggest trying alternatives like Airbnb - there are quite a few Marion residences who rent out their homes during special weekends at MMI - for Parents Weekend - staying in Tuscaloosa could be a very nice break for your cadet - MMI is in a small rural town - my son attended West Point and the little town outside of the USMA gates was so similar to Marion (a bit more choices to eat) at least we were used to it -
Thanks!

Have you found a place to stay yet? There are great places on Airbnb - many of the local residents rent their homes during busy MMI week-ends on the Airbnb site - Greensboro (about a 30 minute easy easy drive) has beautiful places on Airbnb - and Selma has a brand new suite of Lofts right on Selma's historic riverfront. If you would like the links to these places just send me a private message - thanks!

FYI I see that Alabama is playing Tennessee at home that weekend..may impact hotel options/prices in Tuscaloosa

It will absolutely impact staying in Tuscaloosa. There most likely will not be any availability in Tuscaloosa and if you do happen to find a place it will be AT LEAST twice the normal room rate.
