Hi All!

Just wondering, can english and math evaluations/reccomendations be from any of our teachers from our high school career that have taught us? For example, can I ask my sophomore english teacher to right me an evaluation rather than my junior (current) teacher?

No. 11th or 12th grade. It will be in your instructions. One of my kiddos didn’t have a junior yr English class. And none scheduled for senior year. He had to add a 1st semester English class in order to meet the evaluation requirement.

Side note: he took a ‘sports writing’ class. Which consisted of concise, succinct type writing. Turned out to be a REALLY good class for the writing he would do at USNA, and now in the fleet.

I see, thats great and thank you! Also, do you remember if there was a maximum letter of reccomendations we could add to our application? I have many teachers that know me well and would be willing to write me a reccomendation.

Math and English are required items and then if I remember correctly you can add 3 others if you wish

If you have teachers that want to write you a letter of rec (traditional type, as opposed to the online evaluations that USNA requires from specific teachers), you could have them prepare them. Whether or not USNA will allow them to be submitted is up to admissions. You may need those letters for your MOC applications, scholarship applications etc. If you are going to ask USNA admissions to add additional teacher LORs, they would really only be helpful if they said something about you that USNA won't get from anyplace else in your application.

When DS asked for his letters, he provided envelopes with his name on them so the teachers could seal the letters inside. One of our MOCs required the letter of recommendation to be signed and sealed in an envelope.

There needs to be an emphasis placed on reasons for submitting additional LORs to USNA admissions. As mentioned above, they only add value to comments or items NOT already in your application. An LOR that just says Johnnie or Susie is a great student, athlete, leader, etc. won't be helpful. In particular, if LORs are wrote too broadly, that normally means it is repetitive OR the person really doesn't know you that well (or both). If one wishes to submit additional LORs, they really need to speak to detailed qualities and impacts. Some examples (not all encompassing)...maybe you partake in a faith organization and performed some/multiple highly impacting activity/activities requiring lots of hours organizing, leading, and executing the event and the only individual that is truly aware of the impacts is the faith leader/organization; maybe you saved someone's life by rescuing them from a dire situation and resuscitated them; maybe you coached little league sports on multiple occasions during your off-time, putting in a lot of effort to develop tomorrow's youth and the head coach could comment on your work ethic, leadership, etc.; maybe you had a regular/frequent job. Also, don't forget the BGO interview may also be a good opportunity to mention "others activities" which may not fit the application or an additional LOR. Bottom line, additional LORs need to be unique, distinct, talk about leadership qualities, and impact.
