Hi USNA Service Academy Forum,
My DD received her LOA last month, and she has no application concerns -- except one very distressing concern. This is pretty important, so if you're reading this you may want to sit down with your plebe-to-be.

I'll keep it short:
I Day - June 25
Top Gun Maverick Premiere - June 26

God giveth and God taketh away.

"...the end is inevitable Maverick. Your kind is headed toward extinction..."
"Maybe so sir...but not today."

I can't wait to see that movie and pick it apart for the complete lack of reality that it will show, just like last time. ;)

Of course. But it will still be fun! DD and DBIL both harrumphed and snorted through the first one, but still...

I went to the first one with a bunch of inebriated aviators. I was also inebriated. It was a blast. I have never laughed any harder than I did that night.
Wow, that was thirty-three years ago.

What's a realistic movie for fighter pilot life? There seem to be a few fairly accurate soldier ones, how about movies for fighter pilots? Younger DS is only in 8th grade, and he's more suited to flying than older DS (USMA applicant). But I'm basing that on Top Gun #1

Inebriated Aviators ? Say it ain't so ! Actually, 33 years ago you'd have been penalized for repeating words.

I recall my first viewing of Top Gun -- the film broke several times during the last fight scene (where Mav saves the day after freezing). That kinda ruined the movie. I've only seen it about a bazillions times since, and each viewing gets cornier.

I have no idea, because I am not an aviator, but I am sure there are more realistic ones than Top Gun. I loved the "Great Santini" Not much flying, but a great movie about a Marine Aviator. (Actually, it might be accurate in the sense that I hear the Marines are not getting enough flight time these days.)

Other of my favorite aviation movies: "The Bridges at Toko Ri" and "The War Lover"

I was 14 when the original came out. I remember sitting in the theaters right in front of a bunch of pilots. Through the entire movie, I heard (in an 80's sarcastic voice) "Fake....That's so fake".

This is easy dude....she's a big kid now so you drop her off at Alumni Hall in the AM...."gotta go honey, important things I need to do, behave yourself and do well"

Immediately off to the theater for advanced tickets, then over to the Rooster for some breakfast, arrange to hook up with buddies for a walk over to Eastport and O'Leary's for an afternoon of cocktails to discuss the original move, good laughs, what to anticipate from this one.
Time for dinner and short 25 yard walk over to Lewene's for great steak and more movie talk. (No talk of DD, pride in her accomplishments, USNA, how she'll do, the future etc. Hey, they're adults now and you can catch up at PPW where you can tell her about the movie).

Grab some shut eye and get ready for the big day...movie time is just hours away. PS...don't forget to make reservations for post movie de-briefing session. Suggest on the water joint that makes great drinks).

Mission accomplished...glad I could be of some service.

A realistic movie could certainly be made, called “Waiting.” Waiting for the wx to clear, waiting for the part to come in for your jet, waiting until you’re given an up check by the flight surgeon for your cold, waiting on shore duty so you can go back to operational flying, waiting in line for the hot pits, waiting for clearance to do X, waiting on deck as the ready bird but never actually going, and many more! Courtesy of DH and DBIL, both fighter weenies.

Very, very true. I told my DS when he decided to do all this: "Get used to waiting".

I’ll concede I’ve heard plenty of air stories. “There I was, upside down at x-thousand feet, when...”

As I tell people my combat flying was flying from “... tedium to apathy and back again with an occasional side trip to monotony.” Granted, I wasn’t flying fighters
On one mission after 7 hours of flying at 75’ in 120 degree heat wearing chicken plate I looked over and my copilot who was supposed to be navigating was sound asleep and the map was on the floor. I let it go for a while. After about 5 minutes he awoke with a start and said “Oh, I dropped the map.” I responded “Yeah, about 5 minutes ago.”
We are both in the airlines now and he knows every time we run into each other this story will come up.
