"SNAFUs" like these help explain why folks are separating from Big Blue in droves.

First off nobody has determined this IS a SNAFU. I questioned many things when I was serving. Things that seemed like they were completely unfair that we deemed SNAFU/FUBAR. Changing rules for no apparent good reason and many other things I considered a Big deal. As I grew older/wiser I realized most times these were designed that way. They were meant to teach a lesson. War isn't fair. When little Johnny is shot down and captured by North Koreans it certainly won't be fair. Many things in the military are designed to prepare these young men and women for what may lie ahead (God willing I pray not). This is the reality they signed up for. To not prepare them is doing them a disservice. Pampering them 24/7 and making life completely fair isn't preparing them for anything. My DS will be graduating this year and is on this ship. He is waiting for a rated slot and wants pilot. If he gets RPA he will accept it and do his best. That is what he should and must do as that is what he has signed up for. If he wanted "Fair" he should have taken his talents to UC Berkeley.

As for folks separating in "Droves" from the Big Blue due to such unfair SNAFU's I certainly can't say I've seen the stats on that. If you'd like to share them I'd appreciate it. The marine corps must really be in a manpower crisis....:yikes:

I for one am thankful every time they make life tough on these young men and women. It may help to save their life one day.

Just take two seconds and Google anything remotely like: "Air Force Retention" and you'll quickly be over-run with links like the following. Anyone who thinks Big Blue isn't confronting a retention crisis isn't paying attention. The airlines are literally decimating Big Blue's pilot corp. Many of my pilot buds are now beginning to worry about "Stop-Loss." (And I hope your DS gets his [fixed-wing] pilot slot.)

You stated that they were leaving in droves due to SNAFU's. That is what this thread was about. I'm not sure what this has to do with Airlines offering packages to pull pilots out. That is another subject.

I stand by the fact that the military has been this way since its inception and they have managed to survive. Again there is a lot of this done intentionally to "Upset the apple cart". Not sure if these changes were intentional or just a SNAFU, but if this drives a person from the military, then that is a good thing in my opinion. Not much of an example for a leader to run because things are unfair.

If I was to choose a person to lead, I prefer the guy who looks at a bad situation and says "Why not me" rather than the one crying "Why me"...

Obviously, Big Blue's retention problem is complex and involves far more than SNAFUs (however broadly or narrowly you elect to define the term). But airline "packages"--while certainly important and attractive--are not the only reason the AF continues to lose pilots (and other non-rated folk). SNAFUs, QOL issues, queep, etc., to my mind anyway, are of a piece (and I am not alone in my thoughts--just spend 5 minutes in virtually any squadron). And whomever you choose "to lead," they'll need enough folks around to follow. And right now, a bunch of those folks are bolting. Again, however, you're right in that this is a much larger issue (and problem). But it's certainly not unrelated to SNAFUs.

Sadly, I am hearing that there's trouble in the Prep school.

Same here...DH has more details from the parents' forums.

Unfortunately, some are trying to relate it to politics instead of what it is...childish, stupid, and worthy of dismissal from the prep school.

Regardless of motive, it is completely UNACCEPTABLE!

Reminds me of the current news concerning West Point with the Communist grad...no matter the vetting, you still end up with the occasional bad apple.

Unfortunately, I have a very good friend and colleague whose son is currently at the prep school and most likely a subject of those racial slurs. My friend is also a '92 grad

Totally agree with the Supt.

Agree.. What a strange question, it's almost as if the news network had an agenda...ah, probably my implicit bias.

Or how to virtue signal without facts

Just my opinion, but I disagree, Sledge. The General had a prima facie case of racism and had a duty and obligation to quickly attack any potential issues.

Yes indeed, the perpetrator is an idiot and has been dismissed.

The words of the Superintendent are no less valid.

I regard this as a "fire drill" that the General passed quite well.
