Recently diagnosed with Gilbert's Syndrome and cannot figure out if it medically disqualifies me. I have read it does on blogs but I was hoping for more confident answer. Also, if it does medically disqualify me, is it waiverable?

I had to look up what Gilbert's Syndrome is but I *personally* couldn't understand why that should disqualify you when it doesn't effect you in any meaningful way and there is no treatment required. That being said, the government can be completely screwy at times and have regulations that are questionable at best.

It may depend on which branch you're trying to get into as well if you're dealing with an academy vs ROTC since they have different standards. As a parent who went thru the waiver process with our daughter, I suggest you get a letter written by your personal physician stating that Gilbert's Syndrome is not a big deal and will in no way keep you from performing any of your required duties as a Army/Naval/AF officer.

Agree with K2.
I also recommend that you try to find a physician who is both familiar with Gilbert's syndrome AND has a military background. Such a doctor will be more inclined to phrase the opinion letter in a manner that is both accurate and meaningful to both DoDMERB and your military branch.

If you have a high 4.2 gpa you can probably get a waiver. I've seen someone with a peanut allergy get into coast guard with a waiver recently.

I am on the fly this AM, but see the link below for a DOD instruction "Medical Standards for Appointment, Enlistment, Induction in Military Service." See pages 23-24. This is a 2010 version, with 2011 updates, so take a minute to search for one that might be more current.

Primary sources will be a better basis for research.

The link above is the same one I have. Page 24:
(510) Current or history of metabolic liver disease, including but not limited to hemochromatosis (275.0), Wilson’s disease (275.1), or alpha-1 anti-trypsin deficiency (273.4). Gilbert’s syndrome DOES meet the standard.

Based on this document Gilbert's syndrome is not disqualifying. You will not even need a waiver.
