Medical Issues Thread Not DoDMERB

Yellow fever is a live virus vax and has greater potential for an adverse reaction. I would have to notify the clinic I was giving it or have the squadron medical officer come over while I gave it. Fortunately they don't have to be given often.

That is why I cringe at folks who fear the COVID vaccine. There are SO MANY other vaccines that they may potentially need or be required to take while in the service in addition to the COVID vaccine. If they are so distrusting of the government then why do they want to work for the government?

Bugs. Namely roaches. All four of my ships were over 20 years old and we had roaches when I got there and they had roaches when I left. I loved killing bugs. I had them under control to the point of them not being seen during food service operations. I knew where they lived and would do a mass kill about once every 4-6 weeks and spot treatment weekly.
From all that I've seen, there are two kinds of ships:
  1. Ships that have roaches
  2. Imaginary Ships
No matter how much you do to try to eradicate them, they keep coming in with the food, it often seemed to be within the cardboard boxed canned goods that are brought aboard in large quantities as THOSE storerooms were often seen to be sources of the critters.

yes, they eat the glue in the corrugated part of the box. It's a good carbohydrate for them. Nasty things. Subs onload food stores without the boxes I've heard.

It’s not necessarily the COVID vaccine folks fear, it’s the manner in which the government and other entities are shoving it down our throats even after the jab has been shown to not do much (more so recently).

“If you have to be persuaded, reminded, pressured, lied to, incentivized, coerced, bullied, socially shamed, guilt-tripped, threatened, punished, and criminalized… If all of this is considered necessary to gain your compliance- then you can be absolutely certain that what is being promoted is not in your best interest.”

Not trying to argue at all, just sharing a viewpoint that I am aware of. Cheers.

Other countries results are showing negative efficacy.

My father-in-law was over for breakfast this a.m. He was on CV-42 on a Med. cruise in ‘67. I asked him if the had roaches on the ship. He just started laughing. They had A TON of them. He said they used to paint numbers on their backs and have races. And he was in the cooks division! He has a lot of good sea stories.

I'm at least impressed with the technology and work that has gone into the vaccine. A good colleague and professor of mine spent 2 hours explaining how they made it, where they got the idea for it, and it's all just extraordinary work. It might be struggling with COVID, (to some extent, I don't blame the biologists who made it, this damn virus is an ultra virus--it spreads faster, mutates quicker, and is an overall efficient killer.), however, I am very hopeful for this new branch of vaccines, it has great potential to treat the most niche and specialized of viruses, and hopefully, we as a civilization will have perfected the art form by the time the next ultra-virus shows up.

I wish the people who contacted Mr. Mullen shared their results. I understand that each case is individual and can’t always be applied to similar candidates.
While I agree that @MullenLE shouldn’t discuss specific medical decisions, applicants surely should be free to discuss their results.
It's the interpolation that goes on - "He has what I have, so that answer applies to me.

Interesting thread, but a good point with these three posts . There is a reason (beyond privacy) that BGO's are supposed to stay out of the medical realm. No medical diagnosis/ treatment/waiver consideration is the same. Just because X got a waiver , doesn't mean Y can get a waiver. As I have said many times, 1 data point doesn't make a rule or a trend. While I understand that Candidates (and Parents) come to SAF for answers to the unknown, there are some things that just can be determined on an anonymous Forum.

I agree wholeheartedly (if you meant cannot be determined).

But understanding the various outcomes that could happen is helpful (to me anyway).

So from my singular perspective only....not any other outside purposes of this forum... I only have one charge on this website:

"Just a guy with 30 years of direct experience and knowledge of DoDMERB processes, policies, and procedures, who is trying to help applicants navigate the medical pathway, in their applications to US Service Academies and Service ROTC Programs"

I'm not here to teach, advise, console, yada, yada, yada anyone other than applicants...themselves. If there is need/desire for a thread like this, have at it. I just caution folks that on any public forum...there is a significant amount of pedantic/bombastic/war story/"when I went to high school, I waked 20 miles...up hill...both ways to school"/etc on there that is not helpful to the applicant task at hand... the application -- not the treatment or incessant self-focused comments. My expertise is severely limited to DoDMERB processes/policies/procedures/etc, because there's no one here, that knows more than me in this regard. Anything else, I'm the Dumbest Guy in the Room.

So many things to say here, but I'll leave it at this:

Your advice from time to time, is often inaccurate and misleading to be on a public forum.
