Dear all, hope all is well. Just a few questions in regard of the physical examination for VMI admission.
1. I used to have a knee injury that annoyed me a lot, and now it is recovering well. Will this potentially risk my admission?
2. What reasons could eventually make someone to be medically disqualified (mentally and physically) from going to VMI? Just curious bc I wanna be honest with the medical history, without letting them think I’m too weak or being too cocky and make my old injury even worse.
If u have some precious experience and knowledge plz let me know! Thank you!

Admissions no but going into the services yes. My Brother was injured in a car accident when he was a child. They disqualified him for his pilot / navigator slot just because of his leg scars. So they will be very curious of any leg issues for sure. Good Luck

Thanks for the answer! As for now due to my citizenship I am unable to contract with the Army. I guess attending VMI should be a go then?

Here are the VMI medical and fitness standards. In addition, you will need to pass DoDMERB to commission if you are seeking to be a Military Officer through ROTC.

Thank you for the links! Those are the forms I am filling out rn. As said I’m unable to contract with the Army due to my citizenship. So commission won’t be a main concern for me now. I assume, based on what I read, as long as it’s sufficiently explained that my knee won’t be a huge problem by the time I matriculate and stop me from training I should be fine? Is that so?

The VMI medical team will evaluate the material you provide. Past injury, provided you are healed and have no restrictions with physical exercise and physical activity, is usually fine. They want you to be able to fully participate along with your Brother Rats as you all go through the physical challenges of the Rat Line. You don't want to be a "straggler" or be the one that is always on a medical excuse -- no one wants to be on "The Gim."

(VMI legend -- Term applied to Sick Call or those who receive relief from duty as a result of an injury or illness. The first Institute Physician had a horse named “Gimlet,” nicknamed “Old Gim,” which he used to transport cadets who were too ill to walk. Thus, cadets “rode the Gim” to sick call.)

Haha nah I will never ever want be on the list of sick call ranger or gim straggler lollllll, being the special one is not my thing .
And I can totally run or do regular pt with my old rotc unit or gym workout, with some pain on knee afterwards and it’s much better than months ago. As long as I don’t squat suddenly it doesn’t bother me that much. Hopefully it will fully recover so I won’t need to worry about being VMI Gim legend lol

I also suggest you complete your physical and submit your forms ASAP so that the VMI docs can review and give you the go ahead soon rather then obtaining a decision closer to matriculation. Give yourself plenty of time in case you need to seek alternatives.

Dear all, I was accepted to VMI as an early decision applicant and I have sent all the required forms, medicals and statement of decision etc. I just had a question regarding the medical acceptance by VMI and was wondering if you get notified by the institute if everything thing is in order and have been medically cleared? Any replies on this matter is appreciated. Thank you!

You should’ve rec’d a letter by the VMI Infirmary if they needed additional info or questioned something submitted in your med packet. My DD rec’d a letter requesting additional info, to support documents she sent in with her med packet. I digitally replied back to the VMI Infirmary office manager with info they requested. I rec’d a reply that they rec’d and no additional info was needed by the VMI doctor. Would anticipate cadet prospects to soon recieve official notifications if medically approved.

You can check your status online at Post View/Communications/Document. There will be a notation "Medical Forms Approved" along with a date the Admissions Office received the notice
