Our son has been in the application process for over a week now and we were advised of this forum for questions we may have moving forward. So, here is our question after reading several threads regarding the waiver and DQ steps; is there is a specific curvature of scoliosis that is an absolute fixed number for DQ? He is and has always has been very athletic and still participates without any setbacks in HS varsity sports (basketball, XC, golf, martial arts). His curvatures are more than 20 degrees as we’ve read on here, but you can’t even tell unless you have a trained eye with his athletic build. Any factual help would be most appreciated and thank you in advance!
Thank You

SECTION 5: DISQUALIFYING CONDITIONS
5.16. SPINE AND SACROILIAC JOINT CONDITIONS.
c. Current deviation or curvature of the spine from normal alignment, structure, or function if:
(1) It prevents the individual from following a physically active avocation in civilian life;
(2) It can reasonably be expected to interfere with the proper wearing of military uniform or equipment;
(3) It is symptomatic; or
(4) There is lumbar or thoracic scoliosis greater than 30 degrees, or thoracic kyphosis greater than 50 degrees when measured by the Cobb Method.

This is the document that guides DODMERB; that being said, realize I am NOT a physician and I can't speak for DODMERB.

This will have to be evaluated by the DODMERB physician and then a determination will be made. If it is determined to be a DQ, then the waiver process "may" kick in, depending upon waiverability, desires of the SA, etc.

You might get more responses asking this on the DoDMERB forum, for which it is more appropriate.
