My DS completed his medical and eye exams back in Sept. In his USNA candidate information system portal, his medical examination is checked off as completed. Should I assume he is medically qualified?

Not necessarily. I just means a decision about medical has been made. It may mean that you are medically qualified, but last year a check mark showed up in my sons portal and we thought it was good news...but turned out that a decision was being posted in his DoDMERB account that his waiver had been denied. The check just indicates a decision has been made and processed.

The same thing happened to me about a month ago and I contacted my admissions rep and she informed me that it does mean you are medically qualified.
In your case it meant you were medically qualified, but for some it means that a decision has been made and they are being turned down for a waiver. It shows up in your portal the same way. You won't know until you get an update from DoDMERB and/or an official waiver denial letter in the mail letting you know you have been turned down.

Oh I had not been aware of this, thank you for the clarification!

Did you get yours after a dq? Is that the same as getting a check before a dq?

The DQ came first and then my son was put "under waiver review" in DoDMERB...and it stayed that way for a while. Then it updated to being "under DoDMERB review" (which I assume meant USNA medical was making a decision about if they were going to give him the waiver), at this point the check mark appeared in his portal which we thought was going to be good news...but then the next day correspondence was posted in his DoDMERB account stating that his waiver had been denied. This was followed up by a letter in the mail the next week from the Department of the Navy officially notifying him (on watermarked paper no less) that the waiver had been denied. It was all kind of traumatizing!!!

I would have been devastated. Where did he go plan b?

My point was that OP got a check mark before a DQ, which might be entirely different than your check mark. Did your son get a check mark before his DQ?

My son got his letter from DoDMERB saying he was qualified shortly after his exams and the only thing in the portal is the check. I was hoping to see a green Qualified like the CFA but nothing else. Just a check.

You are probably right about the particulars of having a DQ vs. not having a DQ. Just wanted to be sure people knew the check mark in the medical column doesn't always mean good news.

Fortunately he had lots of good options, and is currently attending an in-state ACC school with a top ranked engineering program and enough scholarships and grants to cover his tuition...so certainly not a terrible place to land. However, he was encouraged to reapply to the USNA by the medical board after the turn down with hopefully better odds of getting the needed waiver this time (we even found out after the fact that his file went before the board again after his medical turn-down because they were really trying to get him in the first time). So he's back in the applicant pool this year and guess we'll have to see what happens!
