My son has emailed his mentor ALO twice with no response. Isn’t it a requirement to get in contact with this ALO at least once during the application process?

Sad - same happened to all three of students, ALO responded after DS got an appointment but silent for a year prior.

The ALO shouldn't be invisible. If they don't answer after a couple of attempts....reach out to USAFA Team Silver or Team Blue and complain.

Yes, complain.

ALOs are volunteers...we don't need any that aren't 100% in the program.

I don't understand ALOs not responding. Perhaps they have retired and have not been removed from the roster? I agree with flieger83 -- contact the silver or blue admissions teams.

On the flip side, I can't tell you how many applicants ghost me. If you do that, don't expect me to keep trying after 2-3 attempts.

I email every one of the candidates I am assigned to mentor. I would guess that around 70% of them never respond.
I ask every candidate that I interview if they have been in touch with their mentor ALO. Most look at me like they have no idea what I am talking about.

Are there two ALO’s? What is a mentor ALO?

The mentor ALO is assigned to applicants when they start their applications. They are there to guide you and answer (or direct you) your questions.
After completing a portion of the application, you are then assigned to an Evaluator ALO who will interview you.

What does one need to contact a mentor ALO for?
Well, other than the candidate handbook requires it....not much.

We are the experts in the field; we can answer most questions that a candidate has. Are we perfect? Of course not; but we have access to those that have ALL the answers.

Not a bad reason to at least introduce yourself.

Unfortunately the mentor ALO assigned to our son was completely disinterested in helping or answering questions. He simply would respond to emails “look at the website…” proving he didn’t even bother reading the emails from my son because they were unique military family questions. Then, radio silence. Our son reached out to admissions to get reassigned and eventually was but that ALO was completely MIA. Never responded at all. It really soured the USAFA application process and made his dad (23-year Air Force veteran/former USAFA staff member frustrated).

My son had no questions on the process or website. I don’t think he reached out to the mentor ALO, except maybe when his dodmerb status was stuck for weeks saying there was a paperwork issue from the Dr. that they were taking care of, and he never heard back. The application was very self-explanatory, the website has everything you need. He had a good interview with the other ALO. Hopefully it isn’t held against him.

Yep, us too.
