MI Noms

DD got the TWE from Peters today. Oh well, you only need one... :) Best of luck everyone still waiting.

We understood from the Nomination interview process that MI coordinates nominations to maximize the MI candidate pool. Seems the process hurts the strong candidates by limiting them to a single nomination and a single slate competition rather than letting them stand out with multiple nominations and opportunities to compete on multiple slates. This is not intended to be a rant, but rather an observation. Thoughts?

Since the nomination is only one small piece of a big puzzle, I think it is a good policy. A strong candidate still only needs one nomination, and I doubt the admissions committee gives extra points for extra noms. From what I gather, the admissions people decide on a number of factors, and in the end, all things are NOT equal, and an outstanding candidate will have lots more more to show than multiple nominations. Kids from rural schools with limited opportunities for specialized sports (I.e. Swimming) or AP/IP Classes would never get a look. Being top 20% in a class of 1000 might push a candidate higher than top 10% in a class of 80.

I would guess that admissions would be looking to balance the class a bit. While there will be some water walkers (who I'm sure already have their offers) who can do it all, you have to balance your natural athletes with natural scholars and all those leaders with people who can actually follow orders as well as give them. JMHO.

My DS got Peters' USAFA nom in late Jan; no notice it was just updated on his SA portal. He already had USAFA and USMA noms from HoR; appears that coordination between MoC here is not absolute.

BTW his USMA portal was updated yesterday with 'Appointment Offered' but has not received official email / letter yet.
Still waiting to hear from USAFA which is now his first choice . . .

My son got the nomination from Gary Peters and Debbie Dingell/12th district. Still hopeful, but haven't heard. He only applied to the USNA.

DD only applied to USNA also. Still nervously waiting, another week down. She has her acceptance to U of M among a couple others so some of the pressure is off but there's still a lot of pacing and checking the portal :)

We also have the acceptance to U of M and applied for the NROTC scholarship, so we will have to see.

Yes my DS got denied by the NROTC board 2 weeks ago, but received the AROTC 3 year Advanced Designee Scholarship to Michigan Tech on 2nd Army ROTC board 3 weeks ago. He's still CPR with USNA and WP.

vequixr, good luck with NROTC
Thanks! He finally got the whole application completed and had his interview. He is going to try for a substantial local scholarship that would cover room and board for at least the first year, so here's hoping! Would really love to hear from the USNA, however. We haven't had school the last two days because of the power outages, and as a teacher, I am going nuts looking online/waiting/etc. Hope everything goes well with your DS and Michigan Tech. It is a really great school!
