Question??

Son was asked by his HS counselor if they should send copy of 1st semester grades to USNA Admissions. (They received no request to do so.)

He already has appointment.

Should he initiate sending in grades, wait to hear from USNA requesting such, or something else?

I have noted one candidate yet to receive his appointment has been asked for such to complete his file for review, but that's different scenario.

If they want it, they will ask for it.

What I would advise everyone to do is go to the file, which I am sure you are keeping, of every piece of correspondence including emails that you have received from the Academy/BGO. Have your candidate go through the website carefully and print any actions required. Then with a hi-liter, denote all actions that might possibly need to be taken. I am not privy to your correspondence so I can't help you on a lot of this.

Example: On the "other" forum someone asked the question about whether they should report their son's change of spring sport. Typical for that forum, advice ranged from doing nothing through condolences for all the wasted time as a spectator to the first sport, to a signed letter. The website is specific in that all parts of the application must be accurate and complete. His application is no longer accurate. The initial candidate letter from the Admissions Dept. states:

"Please promptly submit any changes in your personal information via the candidate information website. "

The whole process seems relatively straight forward to me.

WhistlePig it isn't necessary for son to send the 1st semester grades at this point. USNA will automatically get those when the entire senior year is sent upon graduation. Here at our high school the seniors work with the counsellors to prepare all the paperwork for which colleges final high school transcripts should be sent to and I suspect something similiar is done at your son's school.

Really good advice by USNA69. Yea, you don't need to send any 1st semester grades especially if you are already appointed and not in need of impressing the admissions boards. Beware though, when you get your huge admissions package, there will be a requirement to send in 1st and 2nd semester grades so don't slack too much (enjoy 2nd semester senior year though :shake: because things will change as a plebe, I would know, I just got yelled at a few minutes ago while I was chopping over to the bathroom.

HEY DIRTBAG! WHY IS IT THAT EVERYONE ELSE IN THIS MAN'S NAVY USES THE HEAD, BUT YOU USE THE BATHROOM?

:unhappy: :unhappy: :unhappy:

Sorry. Couldn't resist.  :thumb:

Be nice. I thought the same thing but it was hard to do after the compliment. I am sure it was for the benefit of all these "civilian" parents.

Hmm. Seems like someone got up on the wrong side of the bed -- er, rack -- this morning.

Would you recommend sending in 1st Semester transcript for a candidate that was triple Q'd (but non-LOA and non-Primary) where the transcript would show, for example, a better semester GPA than cumulative GPA, an A in Physics, and a slight improvement in class rank? Could this possibly help when the Admissions Board again considers this candidate's record for an Appointment when competing in the national pool? Any thoughts?

Ok, I got it on the transcript.

And USNA69 triggered another question though ...

Does he need to provide updates on specific honors, activities, etc. received throughout this period as noted in that post?

The initial candidate letter from the Admissions Dept. states:

"Please promptly submit any changes in your personal information via the candidate information website. "

For those who have already received appointments, no. For the remainder, update your application as appropriate.

Only if they ask for them.

USNA69. Only if they ask for them? Any particular reason why don't send in unless they ask? Clutters up the record? Could sidetrack a scheduled review date? Won't be considered?

Damn, you guys are tough. I have asked and that is what I was told. I assume they know now approximately where the 3Q cutoff is and also where the bottom of the appointment offer list is. Those in that area, they will ask for. The remainder just clutter up the system.

The Admissions Dept is doing everything they can to admit the best candidates. They want to see candidates succeed. If there is anything they need to make your package look better, rest assured they want it and will ask for it.

Thanks USNA69. You're a great resource.

Another quick question(s). I understand that the Admissions Board meets every Thursday. Do you know, generally, now that the application packages are all (pretty much) complete for the candidates, how many records the Admissions Board reviews each day when they meet? I assume they meet all day on Thursdays. Also, do you know, again generally, how far in advance the records are scheduled to be reviewed? For example, do they know already the records that will be reviewed next week? Just curious.

No clue. I know they look at around 4000 annually over approximately 30 Thursdays and that they are not busy (and in a good mood-hint! hint!) before December and that they are swamped this time of the year. Some are cut and dry and require very little time, one way or the other. I could guess that something close to the 90/10 rule might apply here in that 10% of the records take 90% of the time.

In the fall there is no backlog and I have seen the last portion of the application submitted on Tuesday and the package be before the board on Thursday.
