LIFE ON BOARD

Meals – you will eat in the officer’s mess called the Ward Room. Clean up when done and be respectful. You will get officers asking you questions and remember you represent the school. Be professional. Remember – no fraternization with the crew.

Sleeping situation – you may be put in enlisted berthing if there is limited room in officer country.

Sea project space – you can use the ward room to work on your project.

You will rotate through different departments (reactor, weapons, flight, deck, etc) to experience different Navy jobs. You probably will be assigned to a deck division initially with duties including navigation and ship handling.

Crew will not have a lot of experience with midshipmen and your insignia may lead to confusion.

You will be assigned a ‘running mate’ (most likely a CPO) and most likely have a ‘midshipmen coordinator’ who will manage your sea experience.

Make sure to have your parents sign up for the ships Facebook Ombudsmen and Family Readiness Group so they can get updates on your ship’s progress and issues that may arise. You will have to contact the ship’s admin office to let them know you are on board.

Mail: you will have to get the ship's mail office to get assigned a mail address

Communications: you will mainly communicate with family/friends via limited very email access. You will have be assigned a shipboard email address with your own credentials. You must request this, it's not automatic.

Phone: You can use your cellphone in limited areas but there is limited cellphone service in port. No Wifi is available on board. They do sell phone cards for ship telephones on board but it’s expensive and access is limited.

You will be invited to meet/dine with the ships CO/XO and you may get a chance to meet foreign dignitaries, politicians while on board.

Your behavior, attitude, and work ethic will be graded by the CO!
