midshipmen returning!

And, no one here even mentions that, should any of the mids be hospitalized due to covid, they are barred from commissioning.
??? If anything, a temporary delay. COVID as a barrier to military service has been debunked.

I feel llike people are forgetting that BIG MILITARY has been adapting for a while now...3 months? Successfully.

And success doesn't mean there is NO covid present. Success means that BIG MILITARY is still rolling strong: Still recruiting. Still training. Still holding basic. Still deploying. There is more to this than how a SA works.

Kuddos!!

I don't know if it has been completely overruled. Hospitalization remains a bar, I believe, unless the May 8 directive has been modified. There is also a question as to whether USMMA mids would fit into the definition of an existing member of the armed forces, especially if going active, as they are not considered active while in school. I am only raising it as another issue that needs to be addressed/considered when bringing the mids back for an extended stay while the state remains on lockdown.

(Certainly not looking for or intending a fight with OldRetSWO)

Whether you commission or not is determined by a pre-commissioning physical senior year and the final BCA/PRT. For example in my class one person had cancer that developed between year 3 and 4. He definitely did not commission, as far as I know he's in remission, not that the two are remotely similar.

However. From his contemplation of opening KP soon, it's apparent that Jack has no experience in higher ed, government, anything in the public sector. Somebody needs to show him a Probability/Consequences risk matrix on this one. James Helis wasn't a mariner, but he was a disciplined decision maker and wouldn't have even thought about doing this.

Having read the requirements that 2020 will need to follow upon their return to the academy, this plan is a recipe for disaster.

With regards the virus and commissioning......this was in Stripes

The Pentagon’s top official for personnel issues said Thursday that he has canceled an order that seemed to bar individuals from military service if they were hospitalized with complications from the coronavirus.

Is there any updates to Indoc or someone I can contact? If we come from a base overseas, we have to leave early as in late June to quarantine for 14 before the 10 July Indoc., but if the incoming freshman are being quarantined, it would mean sending our kid on a different date, perhaps later.

The class of 2020 is heading back this weekend. They will graduate and leave 20 June. Class of 2023B scheduled for 21June. INDOC cadre will arrive 5 July. INDOC is still scheduled to start 10 July. Details will not be announced for Class of 2024 until 1 July. No details yet for the rest of the regiment, and all these dates are subject to change. No parents allowed on campus. My guess is that Mids and Plebe Candidates will not have to self-quarantine before arrival on campus, because that has not been mentioned. No other details are available yet.

Hi, I'm 2023B. The 21 July date for us to come back is far from official since nobody in authority has even mentioned it to us. Don't count on that being the plan until 2023B actually knows what's going on. Love that annoying habit the administration has of telling everybody else the plans that pertain to us before we have a damn clue.

The 21 June date I quoted for 2023B is from the President of the National Parents Association. The administration has indicated that 2023B will be contacted with details during the first week of June.

And I'm just saying that it's ridiculous that parents and alumni know what's happening to midshipmen before the midshipmen do. They've been saying this whole time that they'll keep us updated but their idea of "keeping us updated" is a 40 minute meeting with the Supe once a month where he says "There's a plan" and skirts around questions.

I don’t think you understand kid the PRESIDENT OF THE PARENTS ASSOCIATION said it. It is gospel! /s

Seriously though, hang in there, semper gumby. My last 90 day hitch was 131 because of all of this mess. It really sucks but you’ll get through it. I had a hurricane and government shutdown when I was there, KPrs find a way.

What do you expect from that superintendent? He has no public sector/government experience and was immediately thrust into GS-15 or whichever level he is and shouldn't be wearing a rank or uniform. Buzz Buzzby threw him a great retirement gig, but I feel bad for the students. James was better at running an operation like that even though he wasn't a mariner.

If you're going to troll you need to come stronger than this. This is as transparent as a set of whites after a change of command jump into Eldridge Pool.

Nope, not "trolling". That's the way I think about it. The guy has no experience in higher ed. He has no experience in government. His first job in education was the president of a college. Where has that ever happened? How many people with a proven track record in education backed up by advanced education were passed over for the guy? You're the top guy at a college and you have a Bachelor's degree. Give me a break.

You always have the option of NOT returning to KP and going to another institute of higher learning which will allow you to have more say and will probably agree with you and you can continue doing virtual learning for another semester or two. You have choices.

All those other colleges presidents with all those fancy degrees, lifelong academicians or politicians, are chose mainly for their ability to raise money. And they spend most of their time with their hands out and trying to hire winning football coaches because that will bring in more money. Give me someone who been in the outside world and know what it take s to succeed there. You will find very few colleges with presidents who have been there for any length of time.

I just want to congratulate the class of 2020, and know that they have exciting futures ahead of them. I wish them the best as they head out into their next adventure. I wish continued success to the rest of the mids returning to KP. As far as the class of 2024, while my son is not one of you, saying no to KP was a tough decision. We will cheer for you over the course of the next 4 years and wish you all fair winds and following seas. The world could use some good vibes today.

Unlike what you seem to think, disagreeing with the administration doesn't mean that someone doesn't want to be at KP. You'll find very few midshipmen (you know, the people who are actually affected by their decisions) who agree with the administration. I know I have choices; I chose to come to KP, I chose to come back after my setback. Despite your back-handed comment about continuing online learning, I despise it, as do MANY of my classmates. And like many of my classmates, I'm frustrated with being the last to know the information pertinent to my education. But honestly, I don't know what other reply I'd expect from some parent that likes to pretend they know what it's actually like as midshipman
