I am currently waiting for USMA's decisions regarding my candidacy (3q, nomination received), but I'd like to know the answer to this question even in the case that I do not get the appointment. Would you recommend training for mil movement (aka gymnastics) prior to arriving at the Academy? I'm not exactly a gymnast, to say the least, but I have a decent amount of experience with crossfit and can climb a rope. I've never done a handstand in my life, though (even supported) and have only jumped vaults in elementary school. Any words of wisdom/advice would be greatly appreciated! :) And good luck to all fellow seniors waiting on appointments!

My advice would be to enjoy your senior year of high school. How you perform in Mil Move is not anything I would spend anytime worrying about right now. All things in due time.

Son, a varsity athlete, almost flunked that section of plebe PE because of inability to do a cartwheel. I wouldn't overly stress about it, but if you have time this spring to get some pointers from a coach, I would do it, and take some stress off plebe year.

Combat Survival Swim is a course you must complete? How good are you in the water? Can you swim or tread water?

Here is a video on the IOCT you must also complete.

Hi Sir! I am very proficient at swimming and am actually a Red Cross-certified Water Safety Instructor, so I give private swimming lessons to children and adults at a local pool. Thank you for the video, I will definitely keep that in mind!

Thank you for your help! I'll take note of that, since I also can't do a cartwheel!

Great advice :) thank you!! Definitely reassuring

Learn to swim if you don't know how (learn some strokes, become comfortable in the water, etc) (those with swim experience, skills & fast times may test out of Survival Swimming (~6 week required class) and do a one-week version during grad week). RUN - a lot - prior to Beast. Those seem to be the two things we hear about during Plebe year. You'll be taught (or shown) the skills for Mil Movement, Plebe boxing, and combatives. But you will be expected to RUN a lot from the beginning. Build up your endurance by running before you get to WP. Also, WP has a lot of hills ... and you will run up and down them often, in the heat & humidity. Did I mention you should run a lot before arriving for Beast? ;)

Don't waste your time worrying about military movement. Some of the most unathletic people I met were successful in the course. My advice is to try your hardest when you get to the course and you won't have any issues. Don't be afraid to take advantage of AI if you need it.

If you have any difficulty in the course, you will have lots of opportunity to get extra help. Enjoy the rest of your senior year. If you end up at WP, you will miss the slower pace of life and may regret not fitting in more fun memories while you had the chance. My son fit in so much fun with friends because he knew that he wouldn't see them much going forward. And he has no regrets with that choice.

Thank you for your advice! I actually just received my appointment yesterday, so I'll be sure to enjoy senior year as much as possible.

I will definitely be sure to run A LOT. Thank you for your help! :)

Congratulations @efs on getting a BFE!!

I will second the advice given by another poster. If you are going to do anything now, make it running. That really will help the most. My son was one of the most fit/strong kids I knew - he was head and shoulders above his peers in this area. However, running was his Achilles heel and he needed to give running extra attention when he got to WP.
