Military: 7 Marines from North Carolina unit killed training at Hawthorne Army Depot

A Marine Corps official says the seven Marines killed in Nevada died after a 60mm mortar exploded unexpectedly during a training accident.

WASHINGTON — Seven Marines from a North Carolina unit were killed and several injured in a training accident at the Hawthorne Army Depot in western Nevada, the Marine Corps said Tuesday.

The cause of the accident shortly before 10 p.m. PST, Monday is under investigation, officials said in a statement from the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp LeJeune, N.C.

Thought I saw the round went off in the tube. That means it was most likely a faulty fuze.

I just want to say that my prayers are with the families, and I can't imagine how hard this would be. I am really hurting for the families. I WILL be praying. God bless their families.
