My son has been accepted to his top 2 choices for college. One in our home state and one in a neighboring state. He is going through the process of applying for a minuteman scholarship with both universities. How should he inform the schools that he is considering ROTC with both schools? I suspect he will choose to attend the school that offers the scholarship or opportunity to participate in ROTC. Any advice?

If he has been accepted to both colleges, then there really is no "requirement" to notify the college. He SHOULD notify the ROO of each school's Army ROTC program and let the cadre know of his intentions.

Is your son fully informed of the nature of the Minuteman scholarship and its obligations?

Do both school choices have an Army ROTC unit on campus?

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I am unsure of the nature of your question.

Hi -

Yes, he is fully aware of the minuteman scholarship and obligations. We are clear with that part.

We began the scholarship process with his second choice school since he had been accepted there. That school is in our home state. His first choice school was a bit of a stretch and we were not sure he would get accepted to his major there. Low and behold he was accepted. So, he immediately inquired about the minuteman scholsrship process at the 1st choice school as well.

Both choices have ROTC on campus.

My question is, should he let the recruiter that he is workin with at each school know that he is also seeking the scholarship at the other school at the simultaneously?

Thanks for your help - I am very new to this process..

If by recruiter, you mean the Army ROTC Recruiting Operations Officer (ROO), I would say yes, your son should keep both ROO's informed.

He is building a relationship of trust with both of these individuals and in my opinion it is only fair that he be up front with his intentions to consider both schools but that he is still undecided. Keep in mind that there is no obligation to do this, but the rapport he establishes with the cadre is important.

I hope that helps.

+1 to everything AROTC-dad said. I would add that while speaking to the ROO he should get clear on which ROTC classes he should sign up for. They might also have an early report date for an AROTC orientation (or they may not). Anyway, discussing all this with the ROO will help them get him on board.

Not knowing a lot about the Minuteman Scholarship I was just wondering, are the scholarships school specific. in other words do you fill out the application twice, one for each school? Is this scholarship different then the others where there is one application and you list the schools you want to attend?

Kudos to your son for making the decision this early that he wants to serve only in either the National Guard or Reserves, and not Active Duty. Best of luck to him.
