Celebrity Cruises recently hosted twenty MMA cadets onboard the Constellation for a behind the scenes tour at Black Falcon Terminal in Boston.

Celebrity Cruise Lines Environmental Officer George Kakaroumpas and Marine Recruiter Mariano Celano escorted the cadets along with MMA staff members representing the Marine Transportation, Career Services and Advancement departments. The MMA group was treated like royalty throughout the day as they visited Captain Manetas on the bridge, and staff in the engineering control room. The over 2,000 guests onboard the Constellation were quite impressed with MMA's presence and asked many questions of the group.

A complimentary lunch capped off the day's tour. Seeing the workings of the ship behind the scenes gave the cadets a fantastic opportunity to see the possibility of future careers available to them within the cruise industry. There are presently eighteen Massachusetts Maritime Academy alumni working as environmental officers for Royal Caribbean International, the parent company of Celebrity Cruises. A great big thank you goes out to David Callahan '82, Director of Marine Operations, for setting up the day's tour.

That's wicked cool. I'm sailing on Celebrity Solstice in a few weeks for a vacation. Do they hire Mates/Engineers from Mass. Maritime (or any of the other state maritimes)? I always thought cruise lines (save for NCL America) had foreign officers.

TPG - Thanks! We are proud of our grads - and proud of all of the agencies/organzations that hire them/offer them commissions.

SPROG - They usually hire our graduates as safety officers. When you board SOLSTICE - please ask for 2nd officer Thomas Morin, MMA grad 2007. I do not know what his work schedule is - but, he may be working that trip. Please tell him I said "hi."

Happy New Year!

sprog,

Just found out a recent Mass Maritime Grad, Scott Craig, is on Solstice as a deck officer. My hope is that either Scott or Tom Morin are on board when you take your trip.

Please say "hi" to them for me!
