MMI Class of 2021 - SELF PREP

I'm saying good look transferring credits from what amounts to an Alabama community college to a reputable four year institution- it's a two year institution in Alabama - is what I wrote somehow not accurate? Maybe reputable wasn't the best word - how about highly selective, because most of these kids would have gone to a highly selective college if they weren't pursuing an academy appointment

There is a developing mindset on this site that self prepping is somehow the answer for those who were rejected - which is great for the institutions offering self prep programs, but not necessarily so great for the kid who enrolls in one and doesn't earn an appointment. Now what? Parents and kids need to think about that, since most self preppers are not going to earn an appointment. If a kid who is rejected does what all the academies recommend and enrolls in a regular college and takes a first year like schedule, re-applies, and is rejected again, they don't have to worry about finding a new school and whether those credits will transfer, making new friends, etc, etc, etc.

While I will not say that self-prepping is the answer for all who do not receive an appointment, I will say that is is for some. If a student is highly dedicated and has a strong ACT/SAT and a good HS and College GPA, they will have a good chance of getting into an academy. On the flip side, ROTC programs are a good option for the branches that offer them. If a student really has a desire to serve, they can go to any college that offers the ROTC program of their choosing (AROTC, AFROTC, NROTC). It will simply be up to them to earn the grades and be physically sound in order to contract to commission their junior year. In this case, most credits will transfer.

ROTC is not for everyone, especially if they have a good chance as a self-prep. If they truly desire to serve as an officer though, then this is a good option if they are willing to be dedicated to making themselves competitive and the best they can be.

Hi all! There is a Snapchat group chat being made for those attending MMI. I was rejected from CGA and will be attending MMI's SAP program for the Coast Guard this fall. I saw others did it last year and figured it would be a great idea, so if you or your DD or DS are attending MMI and want to be added to it, feel free to let me know.
Yeah could you add me to that my man? My snapchat is therealyates1

Just starting this thread for those of us/DS/DD who had MMI as their plan B. USCGA was DS's first and only choice, but we had plans B, C, D in place in case. He's looking forward to it, maybe not the heat & humidity though. Cali kid here.
Committing to MMI soon! I'm just trying to wrap some details up. I'm excited for MMI, but not for the weather.

FYI - MMI is open, holding tours, and has a tentative move-in date. We will be visiting next month :)

My DD attended MMI in the SAP program this year. It was an amazing experience. She made lifelong friends, learned from top quality professors, and received so much support and encouragement, much more than I believe she would have had at a regular college. She did not once complain about the weather (and we are from the northeast). In fact, she is now in love with the south!

Two weeks out for cross country at MMI! Whose DD/DS is nervous for the start of school? I think the hardest part for my DS is that he hasn't seen the school other than virtually. Here's to hoping XC can continue this year!

We visited the campus last month. The campus is beautiful and well maintained. The staff were welcoming, kind, and spent a lot of time with us. I'm just praying they are on campus because we are in CA where everything is closed and all learning is online. I was reassured when I received an update about the on-campus plan. Here's hoping they are on campus 'til Thanksgiving as planned!

MMI just awarded top transfer Community College in the nation! https://www.alabamanews.net/2020/07... Institute in Perry, school is over 90 percent.

With respect to those candidates who wish to self-prep at Marion Military Institute, I can tell you a success story of a cadet (no relation) who earned an appointment to the US Coast Guard Academy while attending MMI , earned a varsity letter in Crew and just recently took command of a USCG Cutter after two years in the fleet. He took nothing for granted and worked hard at MMI to earn an appointment to the USCGA.

LTC Thomas Bowen is the go to guy at Marion Military Institute for those sponsored/scholarship and self-prep cadets interested in attending a Service Academy. For you Suncoast Fl MMI candidates, LTC Bowen, a graduate of West Point, has represented MMI at US Rep. Vern Buchanan's Service Academy Information sessions in Sarasota, Fl over the past two years. The USCGA Admissions team has had high praise for the job that MMI has done in preparing the cadets for the Academy.

I can attest from personal experience that if your cadet puts in the effort MMI will return the effort it spades. My DS is now at Plebe Summer at USNA after a year of self prep at MMI. I have no doubts that LTC Bowen's personal efforts, combined with my son's hard work, made the difference in receiving an appointment this year.

Congrats to you and your DS/DD's! There is a Marion Military Institute facebook page that is interesting and provides official information from MMI. There is also a parent's facebook page called MMI Parent Chat that has Q&A for parents you might find helpful. MMI has been a great experience for our DS!

Hi, there! I’m new to forum. My DS starts MMI in Aug. as self prep. I can’t seem to find the fb page you mentioned. I’m looking for any info about things DS might need not on the school’s list.

Does anyone know how

My DS attended last year and the requests he asked for:
- More black socks
- A nice lightweight blanket. He would sleep on top of his sheets and MMI issued blanket because he didn't want the hassle of making his bed to
regulation.
-Walmart gift card. From what I heard the food can leave a lot to be desired. We sent Walmart giftcards and he could order snacks from Walmart and
have them shipped to the school.
- Printer for his dorm room
-Noise canceling headphones - DS said it was great while studying. DS and roommate kept door room open to hallway because their room would get warm and stuffy and he wore them while studying to block out noise. He also wore them to listen to music and not distract his roommate.
-Beanbag chair - DS and roommate both had them and they used them all the time. They also had a cheap area rug on the floor.
