My DS will be attending MMI. We received a list of things to pack, among them a foot locker trunk. We will be traveling from the northeast by plane. Is this something that will be able to travel with us? Not sure if this is something that can be checked in as luggage. Any insight on this would be appreciated as well as any specifics on packing. Also, any insight on what to expect at check-in this August. We will be traveling with our DS and wondering to what extent, if any, we need to be available. We want to make sure our travel plans coincide with whatever check-in entails. Thanks for any and all advice!!

We also flew into Alabama and stopped off at Target in Birmingham to pickup most of the items on the packing list (i.e. iron/iron board, laundry soap, printer, office supplies, hangers, pillow). This past year, MMI issued a footlocker with wheels along with uniforms. You may want to call the uniform shop at 334-683-2377 to verify if you have to purchase a footlocker. If you do, get one with wheels! Another option, would be to purchase online and have it delivered to the mailroom. The mailroom is in the same building as the bookstore.

There is a Walmart in Selma that would be another option.

If you have booked your hotel yet, you may want to do so for move-in and for parent's weekend as they fill up fast!

When we checked in our DD last August, there was an entire day of activities for the cadets and for the parents. We arrived the day prior to check-in and left the morning after check-in. Our DD was provided a foot locker by MMI - we did not bring one. Do purchase a combination lock. Stick to the list they provide as space is quite tight and the cadets will be responsible to keep their rooms organized for inspections. We brought a large bin containing snacks and comfort items. There is a Walmart about 20 minutes from campus where you can purchase a bin and any additional items your DS wants. You will need to quickly reserve a room at the Sleep Inn if you want to stay near campus (and also make a reservation for Parents Weekend if you plan to attend). It is the only viable lodging near the campus. We drove from NJ. It was a long drive, but we loved the extended time with our DD. I will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Editing to add that due to COVID, please verify whether they are in fact having their normal check-in day. Your experience with check-in might be different from ours last year. Good luck!

Thank you both for your insight and advice. We did book our room already for check-in in August...checking in day before and checking out day after. I am assuming my DS will be responsible for bringing a foot locker as it is on his list of things he needs, either being brought from home or purchased in Marion (they make note that its available at Walmart). I can have him contact the uniform shop to be sure. We were planning to fly but are now contemplating driving..it will be long haul from New England but could be a fun road trip. Good to know there is a Target in Birmingham and a Walmart relatively close to campus if we should want/need to purchase items while there. So appreciative for your all the helpful tips...Thanks so much!!
