My son’s general dentist gave us referral to see oral surgeon for this issue. He could not understand why they need to be removed. DS appointment is next week and we have 7 weeks before reporting. Any advice would be greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

It is possible, though difficult, to get an exemption for this requirement. Wisdom teeth have to be erupted fully with no issues. You will need a detailed report from your dentist. Though the school recommends removal before reporting for INDOC, wisdom teeth only become a real issue for sea year. If you choose, you can postpone the decision until next year. I would push back on this issue because I hate to see healthy teeth removed.

I had wisdom teeth removed during recruit training at Parris Island. I'm sure they can do the same at USMMA.

Only one just started to come out and 3 other ones is still inside.

If it were my kid, I would wait as long as I could to see if they erupt or not. If not, you could have your dentist submit x-rays showing the teeth have not moved and there is no danger of them erupting during sea year. In another year, the one that is partially erupted might be all the way in and causing no problems.

I am not sure what dentist they are using at KP now. My DD graduated in 2021, and the dentist while she was there was a lot more prone to allowing kids to keep their teeth than when my DS was there (class of 2013).

A lot of people will probably tell you to just get them out now, but I am more of a question authority type. They will not remove the teeth at KP. You have to do it on your own dime at home. If they really need to come out I would do it over the last break before sea year starts.

Along the same vein, they will want to give your DS a ton of shots while he is at KP. Some are mandatory, but some are not. They will not tell you which are required unless you ask. Your DS can opt out of the optional shots if he chooses.

I got them out yesterday and report in 7 weeks too. Total recovery, with some of the most likely complications attached only takes 3 weeks to a month max. They'll be fine. Most people are back to their normal diet after 10 days.

I’m no dentist but the applicable form at Health Services seems to indicate there may be reason to not have the 3rd molars removed, but the midshipman or parents have to assume financial responsibility if something would become an issue. See page 2 of the document at Molar status. Look at a potential scenario during sea year; a tooth acts up in a foreign port and dental care is needed for an extraction. In my day dry cargo ships were often in port for several days; I experienced such an issue while in Charleston SC. But a week later I would have been transiting the Panama Canal headed for the Philippines (about 20 days sea time). What would dental care be like in those countries or the later destinations? [Korea, Formosa, Hong Kong, Japan, etc.]. These days ships don’t have the luxury of being in ports for days, often 12 to 20 hours is typical and the ship docks miles from any population centers.

Thank you for your advice. We are still having problem finding yellow fever vaccine and it’s required one.

Have you tried a travel clinic? Travel clinics specialize in those who travel internationally regularly for business or overseas NGO or humanitarian work.

Where are you seeing that Yellow Fever is required prior to admission? The document at Shot summary doesn’t mention it, again for pre-admission. It is very likely needed prior to sea year.
Many of these issues are being discussed on the parents Facebook group. They are holding weekly Zoom meetings on Sunday nights.
I registered but I don’t see any information.

I am a Dental Hygienist and getting your wisdom teeth removed is a very common procedure especially with an Oral Surgeon. You do not usually wait to have them removed until the teeth erupt. It is easier when roots are not fully formed. Your recovery should be very fast and would definitely be ready in 7 weeks. Wisdom teeth can come in fine for a lot of people, but a lot of people have issues with them as they are coming in. People can’t clean them as well and tend to get decay more often.
