Mom and Dad New to the Forum

Welcome to the forums! This will be a great source of information, camaraderie and support. It sure has been for me. You will have a great group of USMMA alumnus, parents of current mids and prior on the forum who will be available to you here. Again, congratulations to you and your kiddo.

Welcome! You are in for a wild ride! Be proud of your son and enjoy the time you have with him between now and July! It will go fast. Happy to answer any questions you may have as a parent who went through plebe preparations last summer.

Thank you. Where can I get a schedule? Will a packet with information come out soon? We’re planners here. :)

Also, it is important to note for the planners among the Plebe Candidates and parents that you need to be extremely flexible. Even without COVID complications, schedules are often changed at the last minute, liberty and leave are moved or cancelled, watch bills are changed, and a million other things move about with little or no warning and usually with no reasons provided. It drove me crazy at first, but you have to get used to it or you will be miserable. Good practice for a future career at sea or in the military...

I had a post full of links for you that a moderator did not approve.... sorry.

*Note this was last year's reporting packet but most of it still applies to Class of 2025
@EhzErz, DS needs an iron! Who is going to teach him what to do with that? Maybe the dry cleaner will give him a lesson!

1) Read everything kpmom2013 and CaptMJ write. 2) Write down your plans, schedules, etc in pencil. 3) Keep your opinions to yourself. Neither DS nor KP want to hear them. DS is now governed by rules and regulations, written and unwritten, which are foreign to you and I. 4) Join your parents group. Someone there will always be available to listen and explain. 5) Your job is to support, listen, listen and support. 6) If you must give advice, then "Stay ahead of the books. Get help before you need. Make sure you know what you think you know." That is all. Now sit back, watch, and be amazed at and enjoy DS's growth.

1st Congratulations, you did good!
2nd. Good luck to your DS.
3rd. ditto Hockey 10's post.
4th Try not to stress; your DS will figure out all of that other stuff!

The important thing for you to do is to find out where to stay when you visit & where to eat! Here's a place to start:
The pizza's so good you'd think you'd died and went to heaven;)

@RJTennis, if you've got some time on your hands you can also go back and read through some of the older Merchant Marine Academy threads.. They stretch back almost 15 years and cover a wide range of subjects.. You'll be able to glean quite a bit of information that way.. and depending on the thread, it can also be entertaining.. Good luck to your kid..

Please keep those restaurant and hotel recommendations coming, I’ve been wondering. When we visited two years ago or so, we ate on campus and had froyo in town. Neither was remarkable lol.

Look for an Airbnb. You can get reasonably close to campus much cheaper than a hotel. Do not rent a car. Long island Railroad or a quick bus or Uber ride will take you where you need to go.

Bareburgers. Deli on the Green. Great Neck diner. Morton's for a 65$ steak which isn't as good as it should be. A Peruvian place in Bayside which is different.

Thanks. Doesn’t sound like there’s anywhere too exciting :-(. We’ll definitely try that pizza you highly recommended and maybe the Peruvian.

There are some standout places near USCGA and USNA so I was hoping the same for USMMA.

Thank you. We only live about an hour away so we’ll rarely stay over but wanted to know the options in case occasions like parents weekend warrant staying very close. (Yes, I know there might not be parents weekend with Covid.). I’ll definitely check out Airbnb.

Congrtats: If you have not done so yet join the fb Official Class of 2025 Parents Page. The NPA will be assigning ambassadors, parents who have current mids at KP, to help answer the many questions you will have. They will also conduct zoom calls on a regular basis leading up to Reporting Day. These ambassadors will remain on the page throughout the year and are a tremendous source of information and support.

Hello. Our DS accepted and will be a member of the USMMA Class of 2025. Old mom and dad could definately use any all all information on what to expect, dos and don'ts, etc...
Congratulations to your DS; our DS is also a part of the Class of 2025 so see you in July:)

After reading last year's log book, our son had his wisdom teeth extracted and obtained his TWIC/updated passport. The Navy Exchange has some great souvenirs if you're looking for a celebratory item . I was told that the class of 2025 log book (specifically the medical, guessing that's Covid related) will have some changes so last year's is only a guide. Definitely join the FB groups: National parents, regional parents, Class of 2025 for parents, and I believe there's a cookie cafe forum? Your DS is encouraged to also join a separate FB page which is only for the students of 2025. We've obtained a Calc tutor so that DS can have an abbreviated review prior to Indoc. There's also a bundle of study sheets that the southern assoc. parents sell for Chem/Calc/Phy and Stats. If you have any local families who are alums or who have current midshipmen, maybe reach out to them for guidance. I haven't connected with anyone who hasn't helped us tremendously with this journey. Great support surrounding the school.
