I keep poking around the website and the swim coach at the academy tells me that it will cost around 15,000 to attend and be at the academy. The money goes to certain things I know.....but something tells me that is not enough to go around by (lets say on weekends, or snacks). Anyone want to give me a better estimate? Or is 15 grand a good number?

$15,000 in midshipman fees for 4 years sounds about right according to the USMMA web site.

USMMA Midshipman Fees

However, travel costs, weekend/liberty, snack food, etc etc can all add up as a USMMA midshipman does not receive any pay while in residence at Kings Point.

Of course, when they graduate that's what they'll be making too...MONEY MONEY MONEY!

I've heard $10,000 per month for a new grad is not unheard of.

Of course, that was told to my son from a person who is really trying to get him to go to KP.

Max, the 15,000 is just the "fees". Costs for living while there can add up depending on your lifestyle. Plebe year is less costly as your movements are restricted. Later on, when you get more liberty, travel is probably the largest cost. Every time you go into NYC, it cost between 50/100 bucks. When you go to sea, you'll earn a real live pay check that is a huge help. Also, you can take on week-end jobs at the Academy to earn some extra spending money. Example: color guard for a KP wedding, serving/clearing tables at events, ect.

Can plebes do this as well? Some extra cash doesn't sound bad at all then. How much would your recommend for a parent to send to his/her son/daughter?

Plebes can sign up for the jobs but you gotta keep in mind that Plebes are swamped with duties for the first part of the year so not much opportunity to have free time. As for what parents send, it varies per family. The norm seems to be between 25 & 50 per week later on when Mids are free to go out on their own & explore. Sometimes they earn "call out priv" and lots of pizza & chinese gets delivered to the main gate.

Not only is it not unheard of it is pretty much exactly what I made in my first paycheck after graduation. Sat at the house for two weeks after graduation, flew to alaska, one month later received a check for around 10 grand (just slightly less). Not a bad gig at all. :thumb: I'm taking a paycut by being a physician right now actually.

Last ship son hopped off of, the 3rd mate was making 16 grand monthly before taxes.

C'mon Doc.... You made the right choice! The world needs good people like you to look after us. We get "broken" sometimes.

Jobs at KP

My son works at the Chapel with weddings. He gets $70 per wedding plus tips. Not bad for a few hours work, and being around happy people!
