somebody asked me about the stipend for cadets and i didn't have the answer to this. the current 2013 pay scale puts academy cadets at $1006.+ per month, what is the take home pay after everything is taken out and what is taken out of that amount (uniform, food, computer???) thanks.

Depends on what class year you are. I don't have exact numbers but based on what I've heard... not much.

4* net pay ranges from $101 to $362 according to this year's budget. It gets slightly better 3* year, significantly better 2* and to a lesser extent firstie year.

If memory serves, my sons' 4* net was around $125/mo, but by the time they were firsties, I believe the figure was closer to $800.

My *4 was so excited his last paycheck ws $250!! A word to the wise, double check everything they deduct, mistakes have been made. Now the trick is trying to figure out what all those abbreviations are and what they are taking it out for!

Depends

Pay fluctuates greatly. It can range anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars up to just shy of 900$ which is what I received last month.

thanks so much for the responses. if food, uniform and pretty much everything is already provided/paid for/taken out of your salary, what else might one spend the money for at the academy?? my brother is asking me that because he wants a cut of what i get LOL.

Smokers, Dining Outs, Sanitary Items

There are a number of things you can use the leftover money for. If you buy your own plane tickets, you will need to get smokers, if you go on a dining out and shampoo, etc. Also it is always nice to have food stashed away in your room in case you don't want to go to Mitch's.

Good Question

Smokers comes from the older days. On Fridays freshman used to bring their upperclassmen cigars at lunch. Hence the name smokers. Now instead of cigars it's just snacks.

Pathetic! Bring back the cigars!!!!! My porch at home is dedicated to men smoking these days, cigars and whisky have taken over. haha!

Don't forget: if you borrow a car, you've got to fill it up when you return it. Once, my son charged his 4* an oil change too, since that silly 4* brought the car back with only a quarter tank of gas!

Plane tickets can really add up quick - so if you live on the east coast, be prepared to shell out $400+ for a flight in November or December.

Also, your mother will want one of those $95 light nylon jackets from the Gift Shop, with the matching $40 scarf and $35 mittens. :) And you'd better make sure you get the one that says "Air Force Academy MOM!" on it.

Light nylon jacket - $95
Scarf - $40
Mittens - $35
Fencersmother reminding you all to hook up you moms ------- PRICELESS!!!!

I wish someone had told our son to buy his Mom stuff from the gift shop! My wife bought it all herself, and I am pretty sure that I could buy an inexpensive new car with the amount that she spent there over 5 years!

Please note that smokers are a 'required bribe' of upperclassmen to NOT be too hard on the doolies. No smokers = no fun for 4*s.

I will admit that over the course of four years, four parents' weekends, and one week long graduation, neither of my sons bought their mother ANYTHING from that gift store, though I will admit to having to buy a second piece of luggage at Walmart for the flight home. Once, or twice.

Geez, I'm glad that all my ma has asked for these last 3.5 years is a Christmas ornament. Luckily she's turned down all clothing offers.

I get anywhere from $100 to $500 a month, depending on if its an issue month. The base pay is $990 for all cadets; by the time you are firstie, you've paid back most of your owed fees and whatnot, so you get more out of the $990

Just to provide a little more insight.

Base pay is around $1000, as has been stated. When you arrive, you incur about $6,000 in loans that will be paid off over two years at $250-300 a month. Combine that with issue items throughout the year, pay is nothing special. 3* year, you have received most issue items and no longer have to pay for laundry service, so pay increases, but is still affected by loan payback. 2* year is the best year for pay, because loan payments are gone and there is only one large clothing issue for mess dress. Firstie year is still pretty good, except for the next few month's we'll have some substantial deductions for officer uniforms. That hurts since this is around the time we are also spending for 100s night, 60 days, etc. I'll take it though. 119 days.

119 days.

Tick. . . Tock, 100s night is in sight. Best wishes for your 1st choice of assignment and thanks for your service. I bet the first year took FOREVER and the rest sped by. :thumb:
