"I'm not saying the military's in love with me -- the soldiers are, the top people in the Pentagon probably aren't because they want to do nothing but fight wars so that all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy,"

I will be interested to see what info he has. He certainly is not the first president or congress member to state this.

It's unfair to take the President's comments out of context.

What I am wondering is if the "top people at the Pentagon" are his Generals, his political appointees or nameless holdovers from the Bush and Obama administrations.

One might want to check his timeline for confronting ISIS.

I'm not so certain about the soldiers being in love with President Trump.

For example:

"In the latest results — based on 1,018 active-duty troops surveyed in late July and early August — nearly half of respondents (49.9 percent) had an unfavorable view of the president, compared to about 38 percent who had a favorable view. Questions in the poll had a margin of error of up to 2 percent."

"Among all survey participants, 42 percent said they “strongly” disapprove of Trump’s time in office. Among active-duty service members surveyed in the poll, 41 percent said they would vote for Biden, the Democratic nominee, if the election was held today. Only 37 percent said they plan to vote to re-elect Trump."

"The splits between officer and enlisted views within the poll are notable. More than 59 percent of officers said they have a poor view of the president, with more than half saying they strongly disapprove."

"Among enlisted respondents, 47 percent said they have an unfavorable view, and nearly 39 percent a favorable view. Enlisted views of Trump’s performance in office have consistently been more favorable than those of officers in the poll over the last four years."

Use that sort of stuff from the Military Times family with a bit of caution as they have some very "tabloidy" tendencies and they've had some pretty sketchy research in the past.

The same source (Military Times) says that their poll in January 2017 showed Obama, after 8 years in office, with a paltry 36% overall approval rating among active duty military personnel.

Not too different from Trump's current 37% approval.

This doesn't seem like they're carrying water for the Progressive wing of the Democrats by any stretch.

I mean he's not wrong. Men like Smedley Butler have been warning us about the military industrial complex since the early 20th century.

Ah where to begin.....

-- Trump has come under fire in recent days for reportedly making disparaging remarks about US military personnel and veterans. Woodward's book includes an anecdote where an aide to Mattis heard Trump say in a meeting, my f---ing generals are a bunch of *******"" because they cared more about alliances than trade deals. Mattis asked the aide to document the comment in an email to him. And Trump himself criticized military officials to Woodward over their view that alliances with NATO and South Korea are the best bargain the US makes. "I wouldn't say they were stupid, because I would never say that about our military people," Trump said. "But if they said that, they -- whoever said that was stupid. It's a horrible bargain ... they make so much money. Costs us $10 billion. We're suckers."

I have to say I do find the highlighted portion above interesting coming from someone who never served and is too cowardly to say this to someones face.

-- Woodward reports that Trump's national security team expressed concerns the US may have come close to nuclear war with North Korea amid provocations in 2017. "We never knew whether it was real," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is quoted as saying, "or whether it was a bluff." But it was so serious that Mattis slept in his clothes to be ready in case there was a North Korean launch and repeatedly went to the Washington National Cathedral to pray.

I question who is more mentally unstable, Kim Jong or Trump

-- Trump boasted to Woodward about a new secret weapons system. "I have built a nuclear — a weapons system that nobody's ever had in this country before," Trump said. Woodward says other sources confirmed the information, without providing further details, but expressed surprise that Trump disclosed it.

This is beyond stupid! Way to go Commander-in Chief. If Obama would have said this Trump would have his lapdog AG Barr start an investigation for treason.

Well, Smedley Butler was also in favor a military coup to overthrow the democratically elected US government in the 1930s, replacing it with a junta, so there's that...........

Eh, at this point its just hearsay. But if it was said then he obviously disagrees with their leadership style and politics. He's probably looking for another MacArthur or Patton and dissatisfied that he can't find one in the ranks of this Army.

To be fair, ol’ gimlet eye didn’t appear to have seen or heard of a coup he couldn’t get behind

Also how metal the name Smedley?

I'm reading a very interesting book about the relationship between MacArthur and Truman and the circumstances around Mac getting fired . That guy was pretty full of himself.

MacArthur and Patton were both more than a little crazy. Just my opinion, mind you.

I gotta say I liked Patton’s idea of mobilizing the remainder of the Wehrmacht to invade the Soviet Union.

Well, this was about all that was left. That is, they are their Grandfathers:
