Mountain biking at Academy

In very recent past, Mountain biking was listed as an intramural sport that a cadet could participate in, to satisfy the athletic requirement. Now, it is no longer listed under intramurals, but it is still listed under "club sports."

My son had intended to make this his sports activity (in season). If he participates in it as a club sport, does it still count as satisfying his sport requirement? He was really hoping to be able to do that. We are very involved in mountain biking, as a family, and he has a brand new bike that he was hoping to get some use out of, on the Falcon trails.

I do know he can still do that in his spare time, but I was just curious if he could actually do it as a physical activity.

Never mind...it does say the following: Participation in intramural athletics, limited on-season clubs or intercollegiate athletics is also required in each of the eight academic semesters.

I'm gathering, then, that, since mountain biking is listed under sports clubs, that would meet the definition of "limited on-season clubs." Correct?

I would think it does. My son did Powerlifting as a club sport at USAFA and it counted as his athletic activity. That club was more like a full-time sport with daily workouts and team travel to other Mountain West schools and the other SAs. I think the clubs do count, though.

Mountain biking falls under the USAFA Cycling team. It is a club sport. Each club sport is allocated a certain number of Limited On Season (LOS) slots by a section that manages all club sports at the Academy (called Cadet Clubs).

LOS status is then disseminated by the respected club captains however they wish. When I was on the triathlon team we would have trials at the beginning of each semester and those with the best times were usually given LOS. Currently I have LOS as a staff member of the cadet fitness center in charge of the rock climbing wall (this is usually given to members of the Sport Climbing club team during sophomore or junior year).

Some captains choose to give LOS status to people who may not be the best but are the most committed. They may also prefer to give it to freshman in a effort to get them out of tedious squad training so they can instead train with the club. Once a cadet is given LOS status for a club then it becomes a military duty to attend club practice (or else you will lose LOS in most cases). Lastly, having LOS means you are not required to compete in squad intramurals. Therefore, each cadet will either be an intercollegiate athlete, LOS athlete with a club, or compete intramuals with their squad.

You do not need LOS to participate in club sports! You can join practically any club (some are still selective) and compete with them. The only caveat is that as a freshman you will most likely still go to training sessions and as a cadet in general you will need to participate in intramurals. Let me know if you have any other questions!
